Not saying that other gruppos on other bikes can't be similarly improved, but there are many setup details that can make a NR gruppo work far better than it typically did back in the day.
A lot of this has to do with choice of chain and freewheel, with possible axle position consideration and/or B-tension mods to match (especially if the freewheel is smallish).
Then there is the cable's run, with modern lined derailer housing and plastic noodle at the bottom bracket area (I use only silicone/Teflon lubricants on the cable)
Lastly the shift lever should be lubricated internally, and then kept adjusted to move as freely as permissible.
Sedisport chain is a good choice because it is stiffer than modern chain while still narrow enough for 7s cog spacing.
9s chain can also work well on the right freewheel or cassette, it's thinner so less likely to want to overshift onto bigger sprockets than wanted.

I had first gen Dura-Ace on my Volare. I needed new rear cones. I found something almost identical, but it didn't deal properly against the dust cap, so they tend to leak grease. When you look at the two tires of cones it's clear there is a subtle difference. It's not just a matter of slightly different tolerances.

Well that's a bit of an exaggeration. But yes, all of us had to get over the concept that bike parts should be maintainable and rebuildable and last forever.

Until this video, I had no idea I was mispronouncing Shee-mano.

I really liked the 740x parts on the Pinarello. DT 8V levers and all. Very nice. What is not nice is not being able to replace a worn rear hub cone. Not any easier than finding the same for a Helicomatic hub! That and my bias from my early 20;s, in converting the bike to Campagnolo 8V

DA is a product unto itself, then there is the ret of Shimano products.
Recently rebuilt a pair of 10V Ergo's from 1997. Same parts as Chorus for economy of scale in production. Try doing that with DA STI's!

Maybe you did, but I have not yet gotten there. ;-)

I had original Crane derailleurs in long and short cage versions, original Dura Ace brakes, Dura Ace hubs, all kinds of stuff. There is nothing wrong with any of it, In fact, it was all quite good.

After a decade of various "upgrades", I went back to Nuovo Record and remain there to this day.

How were you pronouncing it? “Shuh-mano”? If so that’s close and probably how the majority use it in english.

Its ok, we don’t say ramen, tsunami, sayonara or Honda correctly either.

At least it's better than the current logo and trend for Campagnolo's top group which is a combination of upper and lower case letters. To be correct, I should type it as rECOrD or rEcorD (I'm not sure if the 'C' and 'O' are upper or lower case). By 2050 they'll probably be using some backwards and/or upside down letters!

Boy, that is awful. It looks like Russian and should be pronounced GESOGO.

No history of Dura Ace is complete without a mention of Jim Merz.

Link is from a thread that @merziac started.

Reminds me of the old Pontiac 6000LE from the '80s, which we not-so-affectionately pronounced "ghoulie".

Dura Ace will eventually pull a SyFy and rename itself DURACE. Decades from now users will argue over whether it's pronounced "do race."

No, no, no, it's "Dur-AH-chay".

They may as well spell it that way, to match a preponderance of the CL listings referencing it.

Based on preponderance of spellings and pronunciation, that Italian company's name should have been changed to Campagnola, or maybe even Campy/Campi/Campee, at least as far back as the early 1970s. Of course, in the Commonwealth, it would have been Campag.

I always get a chuckle when I see listings for "Campangolo" or "Campangola" parts. Sometimes an honest typo, but I suspect sometimes not.

The poor folks at Schwinn would have to change their name on a weekly basis.
