Mercian is still in business. It might be easier to email them. They should be able to check their records.

6082 is a 1982 Mercian built by whichever builder was no. 4 - that same year, George Bryan was builder number 5 when he brazed up the Mercian Colorado that was originally issued to Tom Mereness on The Spoke/Harvest/Mercian team. Mercian can indeed tell you which of their builders brazed it up, but they’ll probably charge you a research fee, something they started doing to cover the amount of time they were spending looking this stuff up. As far as identifying which model, that’s not always clear in their records.
Be advised that while Mercian did and does have specific models with specific features, they do a lot of mixing of things. My Colorado (a model name that has been seen on sports tourers and all-out stage race bikes) has round section fork blades and chainstays and the lugs of a King of Mercia with the spearpoint BB of a Professional, and for some reason came with a fork drilled for nutted attachment brake and a recessed brake mount for the rear.
Do get the 10 posts out of the way, or create a batch of gallery photos, or post a link to pix so someone can do a pic assist. We love to look at Mercians!

I'd heard that in 1987, Derek Land was #5 ?

My mistake - Derek Land was no. 5 in 1987 and in 2002 when he built my Vincitore; my Colorado was built by no. 6, George Bryan. Which leaves us wondering who builder no. 4 was in 1982 - and do the numbers get retired with the brazers or are they reassigned? We may have to consult with Grant and Jane at Mercian for answers - perhaps even create a listing of their builders!

The new century brought a different format. My ‘02 Vincitore has a 3-line sn, 5 (builder Derek Land) 181 (number of bikes built that year) and 2002 for the year. This one was ordered in September, paid for and painted in December and arrived in South Carolina in mid-January ‘03.
