Gears on 50 year old Peugeot?

Hello -- I've had this bike for 50 years but never learned to shift gears -- always rode on flat terrain without pushing the speed much. However, now I'll be riding with a group of people who like to ride fast and I don't know how to shift gears to do this. The gears are on the frame of the bike, not on the handlebars. There is a left and right gear shift lever on the frame. Please tell me how I shift these gears. Thanks!

Welcome to Bike Forums, roshaven! Downtube shifters. Definitely Classic and Vintage. https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/

Hi, Roshaven. You should be able to move the gear levers on the frame so that the derailleurs (aka derailers) move the chain from gear to gear. Is that not working for you? If not, we can walk you through how to fix it.

Welcome. Lots of help here in the Classic and Vintage forum especially with downtube shifters on the frame.
