Hello from Iowa

Hi. I've been lurking here for a little while and I don't think I've introduced myself. I ride a 1996 Cannondale T400 and a refurbished 1987 Schwinn Traveler. We recently moved to Carroll county, Iowa and the trail system here is fantastic. In addition to riding, I also enjoy amateur astronomy.

Welcome! I have yet to ride the Sauk trail but I have ridden my mtb around Whiterock and I've ridden the Racoon River valley trail.

Welcome to Bike Forums. I lived in Minnesota a couple years, and it is beautiful in that part of the country. That's cool you enjoy amateur astronomy. When I took amateur astronomy in college, I missed how bright the stars are in the desert (Palm Springs). In the city, Los Angeles, there is major light pollution. I recall the stars were also bright in Minnesota, and assume they are in Iowa as well.

Welcome I like riding my 1985 Cannondale ST 400 on the local trails in Des Moines. You should check out the C&V forum.

Thanks! I rode the Sauk trail to prepare for RAGBRAI last month. It's a great trail with some variety that makes it enjoyable. We drove through Whiterock last week and were really impressed. Don't own a mountain bike (yet), but I know they rent them for $10/day. Definitely on my to-do list.

There is definitely some light pollution here as well, but yes, if you get out away from town the stars are incredible. We have to travel about 20 minutes for a really dark site, but I'm guessing the ride would be a lot longer for you.

I did not RAGBRAI and doubt I will. I am more about getting into shape and enjoying the scenery than long rides like that. I am exploring the designated bike routes and great trails we have here in Cedar Rapids and there are more than enough miles to ride to keep me in Linn County. When my 4 year old daughter gets older, I hope we can go for family rides. I picked up a Trail-a-ride but she is too small for it this year.

Not bad only a 20 minute ride... about 100 miles out of LA for a dark sky and that can be long due to traffic. But we have the Griffith Observatory - Official Site: Griffith Observatory Los Angeles, CA They even have a telescope observing sun spots. And other space museums...
