Trek 9800 serial number location?

Tonight at the local Bike Kitchen where I volunteer a man brought in really nice donation, a Trek 9800 OCLV carbon fiber bike with Deore XT components. We need a serial number to enter it into our system and nobody in the shop tonight could find one anywhere on this bike. Does anybody know where to find the serial number on this early 90's carbon Trek?

Can you be more specific? We found numbers on the inside of each rear dropout, (different number on each left and right), but as those are cast rather than stamped we assume those are part numbers.

Unlike metal frames, it isn't possible to stamp a serial number onto a carbon bike. Most of the time serial numbers on carbon bikes are on a sticker or decal. Stickers can be removed. It is possible that the serial number was on a sticker that was removed at some time

Thanks, I think you must be right about a sticker that was removed. We've had four guys go over this thing from every angle and nobody could find it.

I haven't had my 5200 for over 10 years. I thought that the number was on the dropout. My wife kept the book! The number is on the right dropout on the Der. hanger.

Yes! There it was on the inside of the der hanger. Had to drop the wheel to read it. Thanks very much davidad!
