Found missing cable cap

Cleaning my bikes drivetrain today after a ride and I noticed the RD cable cap was missing. Cable was a little unwound but didn’t look too bad.

During the cleaning I found the cap wedged firmly between two sprockets. Might explain a shifting problem I had earlier. The chain skipped but then seemed OK. That must have been when the cap was driven deep and out of the way.

Cap removed with needle nose pliers and cable trimmed and recapped.

Anyone else ever have this happen?

That would be like winning lottery if 'everything else was equal'. Somehow the cable end had to get caught up in the chain and the cap was stripped off it. Normally your cable wouldn't be so frayed if the cap just fell off, it looks like it was mauled by the chain...
Maybe you backed your bike into a bush or something and bent the cable and it got wedged in chain and when you started driving, it did the thing.

That is a good possibility. I did have a rear flat earlier in the ride, it could have happened when changing the tube.

Never had that happen, but I use heat shrink tubing on the end of cables, instead of caps.

Must have been the day when everything went wrong.

@freeranger: Shrink tubes! Hey, that's good idea! Would look OK too.
