Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Same. I've replaced mine once in 70,000 miles. These "change them every year" people can jump in a lake.

I assume reassembling the toilet paper cabinet was a top priority.

That reminds me. I haven't ridden the Rio in a while. No shifting required.

Twice the rear one frayed and strands started poking me in the hand. It felt like a bee was stinging me when I gripped the hood to stand.
With my Shimano bikes the rear shifting gets all wonky when the cable frays.
Once we were out in the mountains and a guy broke his rear cable so he was stuck in the small cog, not ideal for climbing out of there. I pulled the cable from the shifter end until it was in the second biggest cog and tied it in a knot around the cable stop. He was able to climb like that.
Replaced a broken RD cable for someone today. External era Shimano.

Our house did have fuses, the old screw-in kind. Amazingly, we didn't blow that many.

I remembered I had one break on my touring bike someplace in Kentucky. I had a spare with me but it was some kind of universal wire that had a ferrule on each end, (different sizes) so I had to cut one off to use it. The only thing I had was a nail clipper and I hacked through it with that. I think I still have those clippers around here somewhere, they're damaged from cutting the cable.

Motorcycling in the desert and one of the guys broke his throttle cable at the top end. I read somewhere about making the front brake into a finger throttle, so I tied the broken end to his brake lever and it worked except every time he brushed against a bush he got unwanted acceleration. And he had no front brake.

I had the throttle cable on my 1966 MGB break. Accelerator just suddenly dropped to the floor. I ended up getting home (a couple miles) by clamping the ends together with a tygon hose clamp I just happened to have in the car. Then I walked the 4.5 miles to the Auto Parts store, bought a cable, and walked 4.5 miles back. Replacing the cable was a cinch after that!

I went to college the next county north, and my wife grew up in Erie County PA and Chautauqua County NY, right across the state line.

Some poor bugger just dropped his exhaust pipe!" Then the sound didn't get closer or farther away, so I looked in the mirror and saw the sparks coming out the back. I was 'some poor bugger'.

Once out of the tunnel, I pulled over onto the verge. Rear hanger broken. I had two of those screw-type radiator hose clamps, so I jury rigged a hanger and hooked it over the bumper support. That actually lasted me quite some time!

Back hanger on my 1977 Toyota Corona failed, and luckily I was headed home from work so I was actually wearing a belt. I used that to hang the tailpipe from the bumper. Totally wrecked my belt but it got me home.
