Had a few drinks, went on Ebay (again)

What the title says - this arrived today, due to mixing red wine & Ebay. To be honest, for the price I paid (£20 including delivery) I'm not at all disappointed - the rust looks bad but is all surface, no deep corrosion, and the stem's not stuck in place. The shifters, brake levers and calipers are moving freely, no corrosion at all, and the brake shoes look new with no wear at all. I think the shifters are Huret, and the brake levers and calipers are Mafac, but I'm happy to be corrected

I've already got a Peugeot Premiere, and I think this is identical except for the ANC-Halfords graphics, so it should be a nice bike to ride when it's rebuilt. First thing to find is a 25mm seatpost. I did think about just patching up the paintwork, but I think it really needs stripping completely and repainting.

Any other stories about impulse or alcohol assisted buys on Ebay?

That bike looks as haggard as one or two of the drunken one-night stands I had in my youth. As far as I can recall, none had missing limbs...

As the saying goes, "beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder"...

The ANC Halfords is a good sign if legit. I would have paid that for rough team frame for the wall. Assuming it's not a model. Don't know Puegeot well but those were supposedly all Campy.

Does that have a tubing sticker on it? It looks a lot like the Reynolds 501 tubed Peugeot I picked up for $20 a while back. ("As-is" sale. Not test ride, no return.) It had been hit hard by an SUV, judging from the frame damage. Got it on the road for another $90 and parts on hand. The ride was a true blast and inspired my custom ti fix gear 5 years later.

Mine was either a model under yours or earlier. No internal cable routing. Same internal lugs, similar fork (though it was trashed and didn't hang around long), same dropouts.

I have learned in the past not to drink beer and get on the internet. I either say something or buy something I shouldn't have.

Rust you can deal with. The 25mm seatpost might be the real challenge.

A decade ago, I bought a Peugeot Corbier at a rummage sale for cheap. Didn't come with a saddle or seatpost, and now I know why - same weird seatpost size. The seat tube inner diameter measured 24.8mm if memory serves.

Took me a few months to find an old SR micro-adjust post in that size. My options were fairly slim back then - find one that fit, or shim a smaller one. Don't know if the situation is any better now.

OP. check the seattube diameter. My Peugeot takes a 26.0 post. I have a fluted Laprade (nice but quite used) 26.0 in mine. That bike is retired, so if yours is 26.0,you are welcome to it. (Length is approximately 2 miles so that shouldn't be an issue.)

I hear ya.
My "decision" to get Chorus instead of NOS Athena or Potenza was fueled by several glasses of wine. No remorse, however. a $300 choice was made, and it is fairly easy to live with.

Some were bad decisions most were fairly okay but almost all had to be explained away to "someone".

Sadly it's not the real thing - it's a team replica made with good old Carbolite 103 HLE; as I recall from back then these were a special sold by Halfords to cash in on their trade team. Probably made 1987, my Premiere is a 1986 and is pretty much identical except for the internal cable routing. My Premiere is a great ride, this one's the same size so it should be just as good.

Thank you for this Ben - I'm pretty sure this will be the same as the Premiere, which was - I think - a 25mm. I bought that one new and it's still got the original seatpost.

Those Co-Motions are nice machines made in Eugene Oregon, I had a rather tall friend who had them make him a bike with their tandem tubing. They do good work.

Well, at this point, probably the worst thing you can do is throw good money after bad in an emotional effort to turn a small misstep into a rationalization that you don't like riding and which costs you another $200. If you've thought this over for a while, and that's what you want to do, I'd be the last person on earth to fault you. Have a few projects that I've put far more into than they're worth. Have regretted a couple, but learned what I like along the way.

Merlot is laced with toxins and substances that induce adverse biological functions. I'd regret that more than the purchase.

Couple things.

As far as I know, Carbolite is not the same as HLE. HLE was the successor to Carbolite.

Kalloy makes a 25mm seat post. I just bought two of them for my Peugeots!

Oh, and the Zullo frame that is still in transit (Warsaw, Poland at last check) was a wine-infused offer (fortunately on the low side) that was accepted.
no regrets there, as long as the photos are accurate.....
