Just about any 70's/80's bike boom "ten-speed" or more modern hybrid bike should work as a commuter bike; older mountain bikes work well for this purpose as well.

Nearly New Bikes on Ashland just north of Irving is probably closest to you - I bought my runabout bike from them many years ago. Their inventory wasn't the flashiest, but they did offer a 30(?) day warranty on the bike.
You could also try Quick Release Bikes on Ashland, just south of North Avenue - I believe Joe has a few used bikes for sale, and he has probably forgotten more about bikes than I will ever know.

If you want to support non-profits you can check out Working Bikes, The Recyclery or Blackstone Bicycle Works - be advised though that none of them are exactly convenient to Lakeview/60614 and they all have limited retail hours.

Nearly New only had one hybrid, the rest were exercise bikes with thin tires. they said they'd get more commuter bikes in om monday.
