Can I fit an axel derailleur to a dirt jumper?

I ride an orange full sus enduro bike for all my trail riding but want something I can ride more street and pump tracks with but still cover a good distance on so I am thinking of building some sort of dirt jump bike.
Can I run gears on a dirt jump bike if I use an axel mount derailleur and change the hub to run a cassette so I can cover decent distances when riding about to find other spots
Any feed back would be great thanks

A real Axle derailleur? Or a rear Axle derailleur?
