Cruiser Tyres - choices choices choices....

Hi all,

New to the forum so thought I'd stretch my legs with a question about cruiser tyres. I ride an Electra 7D Lux cruiser and she needs some new shoes. Of course Schwalbe was my first port of call and there's definitely some possible suitors in their collection. I'm considering three very seriously so thought I'd jump on here and gauge some opinion and hopefully gleam some useful info from peoples experience.

Functionality is important to me for sure, but I'd be lying if I said looks didn't play a big part too. So far I'm eyeing up the Fat Frank's, Big Apple's and Big Ben Plus'. I'll be riding almost exclusively suburban/city environments and the stock tyres from Electra just aren't going to cut it.

So, taking both looks and functionality into account, what would people pip for?

Thanks!!!!

I like Maxxis Hookworms 26x2.5’s as long as they fit and on an Electra , they should .
The writing is only on one side though , wish it were on both !

Those Hookworms have a nice look and interesting tread pattern.
Kirby999...while you would want the writing on both sides, I'd be blacking out MAXXIS.
You pulled the fenders off one of the bike(s) I think? I'd put the rear back on but that's me....

I run Schwalbe Big Apple tires on my Townie. I also had a set of Fat Frank's in white on another bike. I like both of those tires a lot for 26 inch rims.

tds101 / The Old Peddler - what width are you both riding in your pics?

lennie_briscoe The Big Ben's are 28X2.15, which fit my Gravity SS to 3i speed conversion 29'r perfectly.

Here's the 26" on Amazon: Schwalbe Big Ben 26X2.15

On my Townie, I have Halo SAS 26" rims. SAS rims are 30mm internal. I probably could have run the Big Apple tires on the original rims. But since I was re-building the wheels anyway to change the hubs, I decided to change the rims too. SAS rims have a very good rep and at the time I bought them (~2010) they were offered in several colors (which cinched the deal for me).

Thanks for the info! What width are your pictured Big Apples? I know Schwalbe do them in a variety of widths. I'm currently riding 2.35's but may pip for the slightly slimmer 2.15's.

The Big Apple's pictured are 26 X 2.35. Note: I looked at an old Electra catalog from 2010. At that time, all the "Original" 26" Townies used the same rim. It seems there were both narrow (2.0) and balloon (2.35) models on that rim.
The 2.35's were Fat Frank's. That means the original rims on my 21D could have mounted the Big Apple's too.

I just swapped out my Stock Cruiser 1 knobby tires with 26 X 2.125 Sunlite 927s and love them. Lower resistance while still retaining a block pattern for traction offroad.

Installing rear rack on electra lux 3i

Does anyone have any tips on installing rear rack on this type of bike? I have ordered from electra the MIK rear rack with all that came with it but it seems that the fender and the rear rack have to be attached at the same place and seems like screw isn't long enough.

Any tips?
