5 posts in a 24 hour period?!

This rule seems robustly stupid! I've never encountered anything like that on any other forum. Is it just me of does this limit participation from others as well?

Before that rule was instituted, the site was at times all but overrun with spambots.

Crazy! There must be a better way than taking opportunity away from folks that want to participate. I'm no techno nerd but there must be something else.

I think it only applies to newbies.

Welcome! And bear with the moderators. Spam and bots were a huge issue. PITA for you now but soon you'll be past the introductory blues and can post all you want. And if you stick around, you might even come to appreciate things here enough that you will want the moderators to keep things tight to preserve what we have.

Edit: most of the moderators are volunteers. This isn't a 40 hour/week paid gig. They are trying to keep things that way; a place they can put a few hours each week because they love it.

Ben

Perhaps it's not the best tack to start as a forum newbie with "This rule is robustly stupid!"

If you have so much to say(share?) as a biking enthusiast..the forum has been around for 15+ years..and you've just discovered it..

Okay, so find the appropriate sub-forum and post your "The Better Way" there.
https://www.bikeforums.net/forum-sug...er-assistance/

It's so very easy to criticize something yet not be able/willing to suggest a way of improving it.

Cheers

There are a lot of members that were not happy, could not understand the limitations put on posts by new members. I believe most of them, certainly the ones that have stayed the course, came to understand and appreciate the need for the limitations. There is still occasionally an occurrence where a newb wil rail against the rules and then drop out because of their point of view. At times, even long term members get upset at some of the decisions made by the moderators/administrators. I do not consider myself long term, member since 2016, but actually only active since 2018, when I became a paying member. I have definitely questioned some of the decisions on some of my posts and posts by others. I actually had one decision overturned when I questioned it with a moderator. These things are going to happen, For me, I know the mods do a hard job the best they can, they cannot always please everybody. The Forum and it's membership have been very helpful with all kinds of bike knowledge, some things I may have never figured out on my own. Whatever I perceive to be a negative, or do not understand, is minor in comparison to the benefits.

That reminds me, I probably need to reup my paid membership. That I will gladly do.

Yeah, you might want to hang around and see how things work here. Have a look in various subforums, see what the tone is, what subjects come up all the time. Rather than concentrate on what you want to say, evidently a lot, you might at first concentrate on what you can learn. The rule is just for newbies, but really, 5 well thought out posts covering new material is quite a bit of work to do on the side in 24 hours.

Yeah, spambots are relentless. Back when MPLSBikeLove was a thing, I was a mod. I was deleting multiple new users and spam posts every single day. Mostly they were dropping notes with website URLs so they would rise to the top of Google searches.

And the spammers are getting smarter.... on another bike forum I'm a member of the bots have started copying and pasting the first post of threads from other bike or somewhat related forums. Bad enough that whenever a new member put up their first post I'd search google for the same post on another forum, and pinged quite a few that were years old.

So sorry to those of you who are so offended by my questioning of what I consider a rule that could be handled better. I'm not an internet forum administration master by any means, hence the lack of constructive corrective action, but this isn't my first forum nor is it my first foray into biking. I have much I can learn from my last 20 years away from the sport but the changes will most likely be modest when compared to my overall experience. Look, I just want to participate. Apparently this rule is temporary until I've been here longer, which is fine, but that wasn't pointed out in the message I received when trying to exceed the five in 24 limit. This message made it seem like a general rule that applied to all members all of the time. If it was made clear that it is a temporary measure for new members to control spammers and bots this thread wouldn't exist.

Everyone, let's just chill out. A new user had a question because they were eager to participate and frustrated. But yes, by now you will probably have noticed that the rule is automatically lifted after posting a certain amount of times.

May I ask what's that amount? I hit 10 on my second day but it was still enforced. Even edits were blocked on existing posts.

EDIT: I'm taking a guess that it's 10 or so. I'm at 15 now and it's letting things flow.
