Gatorskins in this size performed well on the Holdsworth tandem I owned.
Getting a flat on a tandem's rear wheel isn't fun at all, what with the drum brake and extra heft!

I know this is an old thread, but since it is intended as a pinned reference:

The new owner of the Loose Screws NOS parts dealership, following the former owners' retirement, has brought out two new 27" folding tires:

SwiftTire ''Sand Canyon'' 27 x 1 3/8 Folding Touring Tire, Black Sidewall (120 TPI)

SwiftTire ''Sand Canyon'' 27 x 1 3/8 Folding Touring Tire, Tan Sidewall (66 TPI)

More from their blog:

SwiftTire ?Sand Canyon? 27 x 1 3/8 Tire 37-630 Made in Japan by Panaracer | Loose Screws

The new Loose Screws tires are described as 27 x 1 3/8" (which would be 35mm wide), but as typically 33mm wide when mounted on "touring rims".

Both versions appear to have the same tread. I like the Continental Gatorskin or Ultra Sport slicks, but they are wire bead, slick for smooth rolling on pavement, and not available wider than 1 1/4".

The Loose Screws tires look potentially interesting for people looking for a folding touring tire and/or for a slightly wider tire, with enough tread for mixed paved/unpaved riding.

I'd be interested in reports from anyone who tries these.

I have no affiliation with or interest in Loose Screws, but I have several bikes with 27" wheels.

@ehasbrouck

Score.

Thank you for the heads up. I've kind of daydreamed about a non-knobby 1 3/8" tire since getting a wheelset with a Specialized 27 x 1 3/8" Expedition tire. I had no inclination to go any more than 5-10 miles from home on those 30+ year old tires, but they felt nice. I can imagine that if the tire were just a hair larger it would not be as... nice.

It was paired with this on the front:

@The Golden Boy: I also acquired a bike with the same 30+ year-old Specialized Touring tires. I was more willing to ride 'em. After a few months the sidewalls split and the tube started creeping out the side. Fortunately, I noticed before it blew at a bad time. Now I haven't been riding that bike since it needs new tires. I think you're wise not to push your luck with those.

I was riding a set of original Ground Control tires... the sidewall split, and it was early evening- and I could see something in my peripheral vision- I thought it was a leaf stuck to my tire... when I stopped I saw a "thumb" of the inner tube jutting out. It looked pretty silly. And I felt silly walking home...

$27 for a 27 x 1 1/4 folding tire. No idea who actually makes it, but there are few folding 27s, so I figured it'd be a good option for some around here.
I have 2 on a bike and just picked up and extra that I will bring along when out riding for multiple days.
They ride fine- nothing impressive but also nothing to cry about.

As far as actual width is concerned, it's not so much what is printed on the sidewall but what the actual inflated width is on any particular rim.

Those old Expedition tires were no bigger than a 1-1/4" Pasela, or 1-1/4" World Tour, or 1-3/8" folding Hi-Lite Tour, all are about 32mm upon initial inflation.

Some 1-3/8" tires such as Kenda Cross-Cyclo, Club Roost or Cheng Shin actually measure less than 32mm, more like 30mm, but still are wider than most tires marked 1-1/4" since these can be as narrow as 27mm on a 22mm rim!

Like a lot of poorly-standardized bicycle parts, such as bottom bracket spindles and even quill stem extension lengths, it is up to the end user to actually measure (and perhaps even test-install and/or test-ride) things if they want to achieve precise results relating to things like crank chainline, bike/rider fit and tire clearance.

I agree with you about the naming-

The Expedition was noticeably bigger than the Touring, which was about the same size as a Pasela 1 1/4".

Since I have a couple of pairs of old Expeditions, I should test-install them to see how they measure new, before possible years of inflation bulging may have set in.

The Paselas in 1-1/4 are pretty huge though. And I have several pair of those, so can test as well.

The Chen Shin 27 x 1 3/8 knobbies are a good value. I see them lasting a long time as commuter tires, though they do not fold. They prob retail for $12 max.

Don't you mean Kenda?

I can't remember ever seeing a ChengShin knobby in 27", but perhaps likely Cheng does make the 1-3/8" ClubRoost "inverted"-style knobby?

I've used the Kenda Knobby on the back wheel of my Miyata SixTen tourer. It rode and wore reasonably well but blew out in the center of the tread for unknown reason when the tread was about 2/3 worn. Here it is:

This week, I got an email from loosescrews.com:

We have our own tire! Made by Panaracer in Japan, the 27 x 1 3/8 size also fits common 1 1/4 inch rims. They are folding touring
tires measuring 33mm wide. Light and supple, there are two distinct types, both costing a staggeringly low $31. We want to keep
classic bicycles running and the low price is our way of saying thanks. Here's a secret only for the email list here, it's the same guys
making our tires, that make the custom Panaracer tires for the high end companies that like to charge over $50 for these. Some
are approaching $80 even. That's a lot to pay for special casings when the normal Panaracer ones we use are near perfect
already. Save the money and use the wheels you already have. Great for touring, commuting, and camping. Perfect for restoring
a bike prior to sale. Just search the site for SWT of SwiftTire.

One thing I really enjoy about C&V is the industry vets. I just tried to fit one of these. The Nashbar reviews said it fit really tight. Man, it's no fooling! I marred up the rim and pinched the tube in the process. I might try it tubeless just to offend the maximum number of purists on every side.

Schwinn tires were made by Panaracer in the 80's. Are these not? What are they like?

Those Soma tires look the same as Paselas. Is there reason to justify the higher price?

Yeah, these look identical to the pasela tourguards. I guess they charge extra for the Soma logo and kanji on the side

Looks like the images in my original post have gone away thanks to imageshack jumping the shark and switching to a paid-only service. I'll work on updating them to use a different host and add in the newer 27" tire offerings.
