The Pros used SRAM Apex in the Giro. It's tiagra level stuff.

Worked for them. Damn SRAM is cool.

The only difference between Apex and Red is weight, some ceramic bearings of questional value anyway, and a long-cage rear derailer. I wouldn't exactly say it's tiagra level stuff.

umd is correct. It will be priced against 105/Tiagra but is still good quality. The idea behind this group is to make a dent in the OEM market.

Correction to my previous post, Apex is a medium cage rear derailer, not a long cage. I spoke with the SRAM rep at the last Tour of California for a while. He said that there will be a medium cage Rival rear derailer coming out soon as well. The XX rear derailer is a long cage.

Only group price I could find was $799, so a little more than 105 if that price is accurate.

fify

frankly, I'll probably race Apex at some point. The reviews say it is a solid group, it shifts well enough for dudes to use on the Giro, I'm pretty convinced.
My move to Rival next year may end up being a move to Apex

Don't most groups sell for a lot cheaper than MSRP? Rival sells cheaper than that IIRC.

I recall reading in some SRAM early interviews (around sea-otter?) that their plan was to sell Apex both for cheaper and lighter than 105.
Probably they can pull that off too -

FWIW, 8pc Rival groups are pretty much always available for $650-675 on the 'bay.

Yes, the XX stuff is compatible with the road stuff. I ran an XX RD on my Tarmac for a little while.

The long cage RD can handle up to a 36, the medium cage a 32 and the short cage a 28. You can get 11-32 cassettes at the 1050 (Apex), 1070 (Rival/Force), or XX (1090?) level

I think the rival rd can only handle 27.

My wife's bike begs to differ.

Edit: I just checked the tech manual and it says for all current road (Red/Force/Rival) RDs, it's a max of 28, min of 11, and total chainwrap capacity of 33.

That $799 was from Cycle club sports site, who does indeed offer Rival cheaper ($699). Their Apex page show not available yet, so perhaps it will be cheaper than rival when it comes available.

Rival is $799 at PricePoint and $927 at Excel, Yikes!

Guess I'm wrong. I did some research before battenkill and read 27t in a number of places (lickbike product page), so I run a 27.

Thats interesting that rival is cheaper than apex. I would expect those prices to go down eventually.

I run a 28t on with my rear Rival derailleur. I don't have any problems with it.

As for Apex, I'm sure it's really good. Just look at the differences between Rival and Red. There isn't much of a performance boost, it's more about weight savings. It seems like SRAM has gotten road shifting down, where they can produce heavier components that perform nearly as well as the top of line group.

Nobody has Apex to sell yet, so the prices are probably just guesses. I doubt they know how much it will cost them.

I heard a while ago Apex was developped because of Contador asking bigger gears to go uphill.
and IIRC the last 2 cogs of SRAM RDs are interchangeable nor full compatible from red to apex, so these bigger climbing cogs are usable even with the whole Red gruppo. Though I have no proof to backup what I just said.

**Edit:Now that I looked at the link... well the webpage is now backing me up Duh.
