52-miler with fellow forumite Tycho Brahe in the redlands/yucaipa/oak glen/forest falls area. started in redlands and hit the must-do
serpentine/sunset/alta vista trifecta along the southern rim of town with its pristine pavement. dropped down to live oak rd and crossed over the 10 fwy to hit
oak glen rd all the way up the western ascent to the little hamlet. fresh coat of paint of some of the businesses and fresh pavement
for the upper two-thirds of the oak glen ascent once past bryant st. came in handy for that fast descent back down to bryant. hung
a right and headed over to the ranger station (water spigot/faucet working), then up the endless gigglefest of damnation alley. it was
warm, not hot, and there was a decent little breeze. hit the turnoff for forest falls and did a third (1.3 miles) of the climb up to the start
of the totally shaded (and bleeping cold af) last two-thirds. yah...not today. brrr. turned around and mostly descended back to the start.
newish/great pavement all the way from forest falls down to the mentone city limits. ton of cyclists out on the oak glen climb but few elsewhere.

Agree as I really need a nice gravel bike for some of the dirt hills around Temecula which is my new home.

Day after winter rain storm in SoCal made for some beautiful frosted mountains.
Was a nice day for touring the wine country of Temecula Valley as there were not many drivers and wine tourist.
Plenty of diff routes through the scattered valleys and most have wide shoulders for safe riding.
There are also many citrus farms and horse ranch type estates.
Also pleased with a nice custom TI that I obtained in 2020.

Hello all, did a quick 15 mile loop around San Dimas, Pomona, La Verne and Covina today. Weather was cool this morning.
Did a 30 mile loop of the Pacific Electric Trail on Sunday. Bike lane was good and clean, a few cyclists, joggers, and walkers.

A nice 20-miler with about 5 miles of gentle climbing through the woodsy side of Palms Verdes to close out the year. It was a nice change because the ocean cliffs side is my go-to.

a little c-note be bop a lula from metro san diego out to lakeside, then down to bonita and over to national city. back up d-town sd and then ocean beach.
circuitous route back from ob to the mesa. upper 50's-low 60's after the first 1.5 hour entire ride with some cloud cover early but cleared up later...
still no big ring. chain suck/front der jam from century a few days ago doesn't allow shifting from the small ring. oh well. still managed to catch a few unsuspecting
riders riding into headwinds and really only missed the big ring on fiesta island. i'll look to get it fixed in the next few days but the small ring century wasn't too bad.

Really a majestic clear day and perfect for a pleasure ride. Stayed in the local hills with great views of the San Gabriels, Santa Anas and the Pacific coastline from La Habra Hgts. 47 miles and 5100 ft of climb to start the New Year.

^^^^^There are some real grinders in the Puente-Chino Hills that if strung together could get you 10K feet of climb in about 60 miles. I am not there yet but some day. . .

Waterfall ride
I did a 32 mile “Waterfall Ride”. A looping, road, bike path, dirt road, single track ride to a small waterfall in Santiago Oaks Park. I bring a sandwich bag and feed the fish and turtles. Very Zen,

sampler sunday. started off in the sammos, starting/finishing at point dume and striking out westward on pch for deer creek road. it's...uh...still there and still no shrinking violet.
hit the summit after leaving one lung somewhere near the little dirt turnout observation point of the pacific and kept going on pacific view and cotharin...which is one helluva
roller coaster and hung a downhill right on yerba buena then a left on pch back to the start. there was an attempt to go up decker but got about 100 feet up in elevation and felt
a weird twinge in the knee i'd never felt before so pulled the ripcord and soft-pedaled back to the start. pavement in that small sector of ride was (once off pch-which was pretty decent)
a 9.5/10. all of deer creek/pacific view/cotharin and lower half (upper too!) of yerba buena is new/newish.
https://www.strava.com/activities/4562223785
packed up, escaped and headed to the whittier hills to assess the potential knee damage. was looking to do turnbull canyon rd (both sides) for the first time and it did not disappoint.
a decent challenge but not as aggro as much of the sammos. road quality in the area that i toodled around was an 8...exception being the very bottom of the southern side of turnbull cyn
being a 7. there was also a raised manhole cover that is a definite rim-wrecker/potential crash fest that was (i think) on the northern descent on turnbull just before the fire station (water
fountain out front!) but it was clearly visible and not in a shaded area. a few fun roads in the area such as edgecliff dr. gave the knee a solid test on the short and sour ascending of descending
drive and it checked out. whew! gotta get back up to whittier hills and incorporate the neighboring la habra hills for added wild times sometime soon.

was missing my usual diet of junk miles so one last stop in san juan capistrano for flattish times. bike path from the mission/dtown area to doheny state beach, then a not so quick angling over
to and climbing of cove dr. in dana point. dropped back down and took del obispo back to the mission area. good pavement throughout (8.5-9.5) and bike path was predictably busy.
del obispo rd was quiet and quick on the way back.

71 miles and approx 6,500 ft el gain in total. was looking for more at the beginning of the day but hitting the whittier hills was a blast and was worth the day's driving on its own.

At the bottom of Turnbull Cyn on the Hacienda Heights side, make a right onto Valleceto Dr and a left on Camino Del Sur to connect with Colima Rd to take you back to Whittier and in the linky a route I take to connect with West-East Rd in La Habra Hgts. Vallecito and Camino Del Sur are freshly paved and bike lanes have been or will be added.
If you love climbing, you can also tackle Belle River Rd by keeping straight on Vallecito until it turns left onto Belle River.
Colima Rd is notorious for flats so watch for the usual glass and debris when descending to Mar Vista where you will make a left at a signal. Traffic will be going 60-70 mph so give yourself more space than normal to make the left.

roller coaster and hung a downhill right on yerba buena then a left on pch back to the start. there was an attempt to go up decker but got about 100 feet up in elevation and felt
a weird twinge in the knee i'd never felt before so pulled the ripcord and soft-pedaled back to the start. pavement in that small sector of ride was (once off pch-which was pretty decent)
a 9.5/10. all of deer creek/pacific view/cotharin and lower half (upper too!) of yerba buena is new/newish.

packed up, escaped and headed to the whittier hills to assess the potential knee damage. was looking to do turnbull canyon rd (both sides) for the first time and it did not disappoint.
a decent challenge but not as aggro as much of the sammos. road quality in the area that i toodled around was an 8...exception being the very bottom of the southern side of turnbull cyn
being a 7. there was also a raised manhole cover that is a definite rim-wrecker/potential crash fest that was (i think) on the northern descent on turnbull just before the fire station (water
fountain out front!) but it was clearly visible and not in a shaded area. a few fun roads in the area such as edgecliff dr. gave the knee a solid test on the short and sour ascending of descending
drive and it checked out. whew! gotta get back up to whittier hills and incorporate the neighboring la habra hills for added wild times sometime soon.

was missing my usual diet of junk miles so one last stop in san juan capistrano for flattish times. bike path from the mission/dtown area to doheny state beach, then a not so quick angling over
to and climbing of cove dr. in dana point. dropped back down and took del obispo back to the mission area. good pavement throughout (8.5-9.5) and bike path was predictably busy.
del obispo rd was quiet and quick on the way back.

Nice PR on Deer Creek. After doing Decker this past weekend after Deer Creek and Corral, I no longer consider it steep.

[QUOTE=Tycho Brahe;21861962]Once my but gets back into the car, riding is done. And you did it three times?

thanks. decker is tougher for me than deer creek and haven't done corral canyon in a hot minute but pretty sure it hasn't gotten easier.
decker still ain't no picnic and is one of the tougher climbs in the area. after taking the escalator up with encinal or mully, it comes on like
a freight train if you're game enough to tackle it.
ps...and i was gonna tackle your recent "discovery" for dessert and extra torment..oh well.

41-spot mostly in the temecula wine country/lake skinner area. late start at 12:30pm and the low 70's temps felt good.

Headed out from Hacienda Hgts and did a little exploring of the Diamond Bar -Chino Hills region. Mid 60's-mid 70's under partly cloudy skies and a light breeze made for a great day to work off the fat. 59 miles and 6.3K ft of climb and felt like I had a lot more in the tank for Saturday.
