I didn't know that either was pretentious. I can't participate in the poll. Like many others, it's slanted to the pollsters bias which is that they find either pretentious.

Except for the boots. I just can't find clipless platform boots.

What about cycling-specific cold weather gear? Cycling shoes? Are mtb shoes and SPDs on a road bike pretentious? Are rear blinking lights an indication that a cyclist feels their life is worth more than an unlit rider’s? What is the pretense of this line of questioning? I’m so conflicted! Can I have a burrito on Taco Tuesday? Arrrrggghhh!!!

Why is "free" associated with freewheel & freehub? Why can't a crank experience a free bottom bracket? Is it because "free" is pretentious only to the freewheel & freehub?

If you ride a recumbent, it pretty much is a moot question. I am perfectly comfortable is $15 rugby shorts, and $15 T-shirts.

And I honestly didn't even think of this until I was riding my mountain bike on an unusually nice day, so there were lots of people on the trails. A couple guys at the top of the hill (where everyone stops to rest and look around) stopped me and asked "Hey, dude, what are you trying to say with your Castelli bibs??" I didn't know what to say but what I should have said is "All I am trying to say is THESE ARE MY ONLY BIBS!"

FWIW That's all true and they came to me 2nd hand!

I still find it odd that you would post about it based upon your extremely limited data and obvious bias.
And of course I commented. You created a thread(with a poll no less)asking people to comment on it

I dont know why you think either clothing choice is made with the motivation to impress others. I dont find either of them pretentious on their own. An individual user's motivations are what makes something pretentious.
If someone like a certain style, then them buying that style and feeling comfortable and happy isnt a bad thing.

To answer the original question as worded, the MTB specific would be the correct answer. The lycra wearers are spending their bucks to look like they are trying.

No kidding. Believe me, nobody's impressed by the sight of me in bibs and a snug jersey (even "club cut"). It's the opposite of pretentiousness for me, more like embarrassment. But they work so well, I got over the self-consciousness and wear what works. Unless I'm running errands - then I wear gym or cargo shorts over the bibs or the one pair of padded liners I have (which aren't as comfortable as the bibs). I'm not man enough to walk through the supermarket in lycra shorts.

I don't have any MTB specific garb so just wear regular cycling clothes as do many of my friends - lycra shorts or bibs and rear pocket jerseys. If it served me better on the MTB and I did it enough to justify more gear, I'd wear whatever that was. I might wear cargo shorts over the bibs if that seemed to make sense for the ride.

Fashion, making a first impression that says what you want, and wanting to get noticed by the people you want in the way you want, are valid reasons to do things. That is by definition pretentious, so extra effort is required to make it seem effortless.

Yesterday I saw a guy in a wheelchair, pushing himself along backward with his feet, using a big round hallway corner mirror to see where he was going. If asked he might say he doesn't care what people think - but he definitely does.

Nothing pretentious about it.

I bought some MTB shorts last year and they are worth it. If you never owned a pair the difference is that they are kinda like swim trunks and the material is stretchy and water resistant. The material is also very breathable and absorbs sweat. I just find the flexy nature easier and more comfortable when peddling. I also find if you wear shin guards having them against the skin and not pulling on your pant legs a little more comfortable to. But to each their own.
