Yeah... I’m learning to love the 80s paint job! The DTHs arrived today and look sweet. They’re 2.15s and give about 7mm lateral clearance at the chainstays, with plenty of room for mudguards (fenders).

Hoping to convert this newly acquired 1994 Specialized Rockhopper FSR. Fairly mechanically sound except for some light rusting. Challenge is to address a seized seatpost and converting steerer starnut to threadless stem adapter since the cockpit is super slammed. Looking out for silver or chrome riser gravel drop bars if someone here has a source I’d appreciate it.

Loads to do still on this (bars and stem are borrowed from another bike), but couldn't resist a quick pic seeing as I now have my 10 posts. Love the look of the DTHs.

I suspect that folks have their preferences but I don't recall there being any kind of dogma on either one in this thread. None of these bikes are being restored to original so it would seem out of place to expect someone to stick with cantis.

This looks great. The snow lets the colours stand out and the bright pastels are so unusual now that it works. Interesting shifter (SunTour 1500?) position, not seen this before. The DTHs have a good sidewall colour.

Re brakes, my advice would be use whatever you have/like, but note that most drop bar brake levers have the correct pull for cantis. V-brake specific drop bar levers are of course available. I’ve only installed the front Deore LX canti on the Raleigh, but it’s surprisingly good.

Took FOREVER to find my fit, so I have two of these "crack-n-fail" 90s m series with pretty much the same setup.
The M700 is a friggin tank. Bought from the original owner near Charlottesville, Va. Gave it a quickie tuneup, did a metric century around western Albemarle County & deemed it ideal for my daily when I'm in Paris for work/family.
Found the M900 a week after I got back from Va, tore it down and laid it up while I was away in France (which is I found all the Stronglight bling for it.)

Thanks! The shifters are Suntour 1500. I was wondering whether I could get some Shimano 4500 STIs to work with the FD-C700 front mech, but figured that with mismatched cable pull, dodgy chainline and three shift aid-free chainrings, I was probably pushing my luck. I was then going to buy some BS-77 barcons, but though I’d give these (which I already had) a go first. On realising the downtube was oversized and the band-on clamp was therefore too small, I put them on the toptube and... it’s great! The shifters have cable stops (I’m using a stepped ferrule) and so does the frame, so it’s all good.
Re brakes, my advice would be use whatever you have/like, but note that most drop bar brake levers have the correct pull for cantis. V-brake specific drop bar levers are of course available. I’ve only installed the front Deore LX canti on the Raleigh, but it’s surprisingly good.

I've got just over 1000 miles on it since i finished it late last summer, and it's more or less become my go-to bike for most things. It's not perfect at anything, but it's good at everything i want it to do including road, gravel, fire roads, light singletrack, commuting and everything in between. And that's exactly what I wanted! Out on a road ride and see a cool looking singletrack trail? scope it out! Long mixed-terrain adventures with some hike-a-bike? check! Maybe someday I'll replace the fork (I'm very tempted by waltworks...) but right now its still a semi-budget build, I'm just around $1000 in, including a very spendy saddle and tires, but they are at least mobile to other bikes.
Currently:
-89 Diamondback Axis Team
-Tange Chromed fork that came with it.
-White industries hubs laced to mavic 217 rims (used, swap meet)
-Rene Herse Rat Trap Pass tires ($$$ but I LOVE them and am now spoiled)
-Sunrace 12s 11-51 cassette
-XT 12s rear derailleur
-Deore 12s chain
-Microshift 12s bar end shifter (I've got a thing for bar end shifters.)
-XC pro cranks (came with frame) with a cheap amazon 42t 1x ring
-lugged steel stem (Rivendell?) from a swap meet
-Sakae Randonneur bars from a dumpster bike
-Avid Single digit mag brakes and Tektro road-V-brake levers (520 i think)
-XC pro seatpost (came with frame)
-crappy garage Specialized, then a nicer Selle italia for short rides, now Berthoud saddle for long rides
It's rocking a blackburn rear rack right now, this comes and goes depending on my ratio of long rides and commuter rides. Perhaps one day it will get a nice pair of light fenders- I think this might be a nice robust rando bike with those and lights.

More work on done my Appalachian... Nitto Randonneur Bars (B132) and Nitto MT-10 stem, plus some metal mudguards I had lying around. Crap bar tape that doesn't stretch, nightmare to wrap.

Do you get a lot of flex at the stem? I have mine set up like yours and I get a lot of flex. I weight about 240 so that may something to do with it.

I’ve barely ridden it so far, but it’s clear that there’s quite a bit of flex (I weigh 85kg/190lbs). I like to think of it as built-in comfort!

Eventually sold it on, it was a bit too long for my liking unfortunately.
Its replacement isn't technically a vintage drop bar conversion, but it is inspired by one
