Bikes: Miyata 610(66cm), GT Vantara Hybrid (64cm), Nishiki International (64cm), Peugeot rat rod (62 cm), Trek 800 Burning Man helicopter bike, Bob Jackson frame (to be restored?) plus a never ending stream of neglected waifs from the Bike exchange.

One of the bike Exchange members brought in this Gitane Mixte the other day. dirty with rusted cables, rotted tires on steel rims and simplex plastic derailleurs. Someone had chopped a couple inches off the original upright bars. Here it is after a good clean, polish, and clear coat, with a few upgrades including Aluminum wheels and Kenda blond 700 x 32's, , new bars, Sunrace friction thumbies, and some Koolstop pads for the front wheel. plus some Suntour derailleurs and a Perfect 14-28 tooth freewheel. I saved out the beautiful plastic brake levers to sell on E bay and installed some polished Dia Conp's.

Nice job. There is something very neat about vintage mixtes. I could use one but they are not easy to find in 23 inch. Are those plastic brake levers worth anything? The ones I've seen are plastic over metal and they can and do break from time to time.

Cycles Laurent was famous worldwide for that marketing poster with the shapely young woman astride a full Campagnolo bike- where one barely noticed that and the high heels.

but Michelin Dynamic tires...?... durable is the word but one pays for it.

I was able to vacation in Paris now too long ago, rented a bike on the West Bank and rode everywhere. The day I arrived I had to laugh, was walking along a cobblestone sidewalk with a grade and a local powered by me, in high heels. People Walk there, I should say powerwalk.

No worries, I made the pics has when i received the bike. The first thing I did was to replace them. 😏

The poster you mentioned.... I think it was a Veloce groupset 😲😲. Should have been Record in my opinion. That curves were top of the line too 😁

So what’s so bad about Michelin Dynamic Classic tyres? Seems like both of you would be embarrassed to have them on any of your bikes. Why so? Apologies if this is a ‘thing’ but I’m new here.

The Daniel Cattin Randonneur is beautiful but how is the seatpost secured?

Pavone-

Nothing wrong with them at all. They are a nicely made, amber wall tire for restoration and club or casual use. I use the sister-under-the-skin Dynamic Sport on my restored 80s Peugeots and they are a comfortable and easy rolling tire with excellent grip. Some people slag the Classic and the Sport for being prone to punctures but run them at reasonable pressures and stay away from debris strewn commuting streets and you should be fine.

Absolutely bertinjim. I put the Classics on my vintage bike because they look the part and was pleasantly surprised with their ride and grip. I have ridden them in two Eroicas (Britannia and California) plus a few similar vintage events which included some gravel sections and never had any trouble. Will definitely keep using them.

Oh! I have exactly the same bike. What cassette did you have? It looks quite wide range. My Peugeot has Maillard Helicomatic hubs, with a cassette with a 21 big sprocket.

Sorry to be so long replying.

I like this bike very much, but I may have overstated the case for original equipment. I consider wheels and hubs to be more or less replaceable. If I recall correctly (it's been a while) those hubs are Mavic 501's with sealed bearings, and the rear has a freewheel, most certainly Suntour or Shimano. The rims are Mavic MA40's. I built these wheels for a different bike but this seemed like the perfect application.

That’s a solid Super Mirage with Japanese components. Humble, but a strong workhorse.

So, after moving to Virginia from Florida I had given up on riding. The hills were too much, and there was a pandemic going on. I had sold my last bike in January to fund a deluxe reverb. My belly tho was telling me I needed a bike again. Found this on Facebook, and drove the next day to get it.

as found

it was a 1973 Motobecane Le Champion that the owner bought when he graduated from UVA in 74. Wheels, seatpost and brake hoods had been replaced, but otherwise all original.

first order of business was sourcing the right wheels. I found some high flange record hubs on tubular rims locally, and ordered some 30mm corsa g+ tubulars.

next, brake hoods from rustines for the universal brakes. Some nos campy cable clips because why not. Axle on the original Atom 700 pedals was bent, so some lyotard berthet pedals from eBay. After about a month I finally saw a nuovo record seatpost pop up in the odd 26.8 size that this takes, and it was complete.

And, now I’m riding every day, and really getting back into it. This isn’t my every day ride, since I found a de rosa that’s not as original and clean and I don’t mind putting some miles on, but it’s a joy to ride.

Nice find. Unusually nice Brooks Pro given the age.
