Why would you want to protect this brand? They use cheap screws to hold onto chainrings.

Looks like the stamper got a little too close to the next ring. Inverted stamped tooth profile is obvious.

Worker got 9 chainrings out of a sheet of metal that most people can only get 8 out of.

Are they missing that, or did they see it along with other clearly low end level issue and just comment on the other issue?

It's low end either way. This isn't anything new- low priced cheap quality goods have been produced for decades.
You can blame the country of origin or you can blame the company that spec'd this level of component on their bike. The manufacturers simply build to the quality and price level that brands are willing to pay.

So... I'm going to stick to the China fingerpointing, I'm guessing I personally see ~8,000 unique bikes per year on average. Teeth of this shape are a first I have seen in four years of this volume. Oh; and I am a former Quality Manager for a car company. I'm sure you are an expert, but I doubt this met the contract specs.

You're blaming a country because something shoddy was produced within its borders? Well, by that standard, I've got a bone to pick with the United States over a certain pickup truck I once owned. I mean, that certainly seems reasonable.

That's how you lose body parts working on a punch press.

As someone who actually lives in China, I will be the first to admit that there's a lot of junk produced here. But there's also a lot of high quality stuff produced here too. I have a Chinese crank, bottom bracket, and chainring on my bike and they're all very good quality, with no issues in several thousand kilometres of riding.

For sure it didn't meet the contract specs. When lowest quality and cost are the deciding factor, qc suffers.

Illogical... OK, let's just say that as the Covid Bike Boom has rolled out, I have seen more and more crazy stuff coming out of China. Bikes with ridiculous black market fake parts, frames welded in such a way that a drive train wouldn't work, in fact we have been tasked with building bikes in the last few months that couldn't even be rideable., and this type of stuff. Not sure your angle, but they are ripping people off right now.

If the standards for manufacturing and wages were close, I'd bet the local dollar store would be selling the same quality of parts. Thankfully the profit isn't there for the dollar stores. Shoemano 53.5T/47.25T $0.99 + tax !

For sure there is great stuff made too. We are just seeing a raft of garbage more frequently right now. People desperate for bikes are getting taken.

I'm not disputing your experience; I'm stating that blaming badly made bike parts on "China" is nonsensical. China is a country - not a company or a factory.

Whatever factory in China built that shoddy chainring did so under contract to some firm (perhaps even - gasp! - a US-based company!) that contracted for it - and ordered, took delivery of, and shipped, a bike with the shoddy chainring. And they did so because apparently there are consumers who will pay for them. But you prefer to blame a country.

Sending this message from my iPhone, which is an amazing piece of hardware and is built in China.

Whatever dude. Ethics say you do the right thing. For your argument's sake... If a slimy company comes to most places and says "make something fraudulent, fake, or could hurt someone!", you should do the right thing. We see stuff from India, Cambodia, Taiwan (I have a sneaking suspicion that calling Taiwan a sovereign country has also just pissed you off), and Indonesia on a frequent basis, and it is always on the level and made with care.

I never knew.

I couldn’t read the article in the link, but this may have been what you were referencing...

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/customer-...rd-pub99f99f21

Which seems appropriate.

It is funny because I used to tell my wife that the names of those Scandinavian brands when translated to English meant, crap only Americans would buy.
