I wear a 7 3/4 baseball cap. Big head. When I rode motorcycles, I used a 2XL helmet.

I was told by my bike fitter that I need to try Specialized helmets. Good for large heads.

Any thoughts? I presently don't have a helmet, and I need to pick one up!

The Specialized Max helmet (maybe Align XL now) is pretty big and fits most people with large heads. It is not a lightweight or aero helmet but it is cheap enough to give it a go. The Giro Syntax is an XL helmet that is a bit nicer. Also ABUS has a new helmet that just came out (but I am unsure of US availability right now) called the Stormchaser and that is an XL and probably the nicest helmet of the three. I really like ABUS helmets and have one of their Gamechangers and it is quite comfortable though my main helmet is a Lazer Z1 which work quite nicely but may not be big enough for your head.

Based on your hat size, you need a 62cm helmet. Thats available in a lot of brands. Just look into Giro, Kask, Bontrager, Smith, etc.

A couple of specifics.

I went through trying a bunch of different brand helmets early in 2020. The large in Specialized/S-Works brand seemed larger than the other brands large size. Don't know what that translates to for numeric sizing.

But if you have no experience with helmets, you need to try them on in person. Once you have some experience, then you might half-way get a decent fit from online purchase..... IMO of course.

For me, ordering online would just be a guessing game.

I have a giant square head and the helmet that would fit me best probably resembles a plastic milk crate.

The one thing I insist on trying on before buying is a helmet. Besides the size, the shape is also important for comfort. It is worth spending some time driving around and trying different helmets in different sizes to find something that is truly comfortable.

FWIW when I was motorcycling, I found I needed a large or XL helmet depending on the brand/model but with bike helmets, mediums are usually ok.

Yup, I'm this way with shoes and helmets; until I find my brand, it's a colossal waste of time to play the shipping game. (Specialized head and Lake feet, FWIW )

Besides how if fits on your head you might want to check what it will do to your forward visibility when very aero. Some either come way to low on my forehead and/or extend too far from my head. This blocks my view far down the road in front of me when in the drops and low forcing me to lift my head even more giving me a sore neck.

Helmets with visors are worse about this.

Thanks guys. And no, I had a Specialized helmet for a long time, cannot recall model or size, but back then I wasn't cycling much. Lost my cleats and my helmet during a move. Got back into cycling (same old bike) just before the pandemic, and had to scramble for helmet and cleats. I got cleats, couldn't try on helmets, and now I'm finally going to get serious about another helmet.

And I've got Lake feet too, extra wide 332's. I bought wide Sidi without being fitted, they were okay, but pinched my feet causing numbness and pain on long rides as I got better. Finally got fitted, ditched the Sidis, and as of yesterday I have the Lakes. Still haven't used them, but I am excited!

I, too, have a large cranium and wear a 7 3/4 hat. I am using a Giro Aether in the large size. However, I am also bald so that might be why I can get the helmet comfortably on. It is opened up all the way for the supports and straps. I am able to wear a thin lycra head cover under for sun protection. Again, if you got the head size and hair as well, it may be undersized for you.

Since Kask does not make an XL helmet anymore, one of the very few XL helmets I have found is the Giro Syntax MIPS.

I also wear a 7 3/4 hat. I use a Kask Rapido L and it works great for me.

I have the Kask Mojito in XL. One of the few helmets that fit generally rounder Asian heads. I wrote Kask NA to see if they would release the Mojito 3 in XL; unfortunately, the answer was no.

I just upgrade to a Mojito 3 in large. I previously had a Mojito 2 in XL. The fit is about the same. I rolled the dice and it worked out.

I wear a size 8 cap and have an oblong head. The best fit for me has always been Giro XL.

I just got a Syntax XL over the weekend and it fits perfectly. I tried an Aether in L (the largest it comes) and it was too small. Would have liked the Aether for its better ventilation and lower weight but fit trumps all.

I also have a big head and typically have a tough time finding a good fitting helmet. I wear a Specialized Propero (size large) and will continue to buy them as long as they are available. I buy a new one every couple years so I always have a couple on the go. I like how the sit down on my head instead of sitting like a beanie as some other helmet brands do.

I have a very similar head size. I briefly had the Giro Foray. Great value, sharp looking helmet, but in size L it was HUGE! Ended up selling it and getting a Giro Syntax L instead. Much smaller profile that doesn't make you look like a mushroom head.

I wear a Bontrager Starvos MIPS XL. Fits my head perfectly. It replaced a cracked Giro Bishop... also a good helmet for big-ass heads.
