1995 Stumpjumper Headset recommendation

Hey. My headset is thrashed and while I could get by with just getting the bearings, I just want to do the headset. It's a threadless. I don't want to spend too much. I'm not riding it very hard. I don't need stock, something more modern would work if possible. Help me out, I'm a headset noob (edit: "nube" ??) . What am I looking for?? It appears to be 1 1/4.

Any 1 1/8" EC34(External Cup 34mm) threadless headset will work. Cane Creek 40 series is the best value for the money, but there are plenty of less expensive headsets that will work fine, as well.

WHAT appears to be 1-1/4”? The diameter of the steer tube of the fork?

There were some 1-1/4” threadless steertubes out there in the 90s, but 1-1/8” was more common.

Most likely 1-1/8". +1 on anything. Just mind the lower stack height, as older headsets were all over the place and this impacts the geometry quite a bit.

+1 on either the Cane Creek 40-series or Velo Orange's Gran Cru headsets. Both are reasonably priced and have good sealed cartridge bearing. The Gran Cru has a "split" crown race which allows tool-less installation.

I doubt it's a 1-1/4. Make sure of the size. My '94 Stumpy is a threadless 1-inch.

If it is 1" threadless, Cane Creek's 40 is one of the few headsets available in that configuration.

On the early 90's steel models, the standard rigid models were 1", the FS with suspension were 1-1/8"

Yes. My mistake. It is 1-1/8. I just went out and measured the fork with calipers.

Then dsaul' rec is a good one. But really, any cartridge bearing headset of that size from Cane Creek (the 40 is good, as is the 10 if you want to save a few bucks), FSA, or the like will do. Just look for a standard 1-1/8" external headset.
