Maybe someone here can help ? GT Tempest

Looking to change and upgrade crankset on this bike...searched all over for spec's with no luck and not much luck trying to find what i think will work online either. Are they any GOOD MTB sourses online other than Nashbar , Jenson etc. looked at all of them and no luck finding anything 7 speed. Would a rear gearset to a 8 or 9 help me , i dont know if it will fit .If i go that route i coud upgrade the whole drivetrain. Read a very old post about the 1997 Shimano crankset recall so i decided to give them a call and guess what ..they said they would honor it and they have kits in boxes ready to ship out !! 23 years later ! Who would have thought. Would really like to upgrade than go with the low end cranset they would give me. Thanks.

I have taken it out on some really nice trails at a local park...about 22 lbs in these cheap tires and it handles quite well...already have some nice Maxxis' on order that should make world of difference !

What's wrong with the cranks? You could upgrade to deore with a hollow tech bb. But that's a fair amount of cash to spend if your current cranks work. I'd guess you have a threaded 68mm square take bottom bracket right now.

A 9 or 10 speed crank should work, going above 7 speeds out back might require a new rear hub if it doesn't have a spacer. Typically 7 speed rear hubs can't run anything beyond 7 speeds. But 8 can work with 8,9,10 or 11 speeds out back.

I want to upgrade to better quality and a better looking crankset and Shimano did recall these.
Dont want it breaking and going through my leg or throwing me in a tree !

Since you are getting the recall cranks, are you still looking to upgrade? If things are working, just keep on riding!

I don't think the crank set has to be 7 speed specific.
As long as it has the same bolt pattern you should be able to fit the sprockets you want.
You do want to have the right width of sprockets so they work with your chain.

That looks to be a nicely preserved older GT

No - its not worth upgrading anything on it from a fiscal perspective -- pre Covid that was a $100-150 bike max in most places . Chances are high that you would never have an issue with the crank on it, but if it gives you peace of mind, - toss on the recall replacement and ride it into the sunset

That said - if youre riding it regularly - then upgrades to things like the tires - which youre doing - makes sense.

Seat Post

Good Day,
I recently picked up a silver version of a tempest without a seat post. May I ask what size is yours? I found some information stating it came with a 26.8 mm kalloy. I checked with Sheldon Brown's seat post site and it states 27.mm. I purchased a 26.8 mm and it was too small. I don't have any information wether GT made different versions of the bike. Any help would be truly appreciated.
Stay safe,
"nikkofan"

Thank-You very much. I found on line a fellow who was selling a "silver one" that looked just like mine. His seat post said 26.8 I used that to purchase one. Just too small.
Thanks for your trouble.
