Look at the videos here

Then look at the prices. The good news is you get a pair of speakers for that.

I've had "Fixing a Hole" stuck in my head all morning. Also, the San Diego Symphony is performing the whole Sgt. Peppers album at the bayside summer nights concert series - looking forward to it. Sgt. Peppers is my favorite Beatles album.

This is the Bach piece I am working played by Glenn Gould... I recorded myself playing and OMG what a nightmare to listen to. For awhile, I could not play it at all with hands together. That is the racing equivalent of not being able to clip in.

I finished the Bach Invention. My lesson on Monday was a tour de force. I am supposed to get a one hour lesson but she kept it going for 2 hours. I was drained - think TSS of 400. I got home and fell asleep. We are moving on to the next lesson in Czerny and another Bach piece. She is thinking one of the Goldberg Variations which I like all of them and maybe the E Major Fugue IX.

What is interesting is the next lesson in Czerny looks like something Lizst would have written. And Czerny was Lizst's piano teacher. In essence Bach and Czerny developed the music and teaching construct that fueled all to follow. Bach is so intellectual, mathematical and structured based. The music is complex and requires focus and repeated listening to fully appreciate the genius.

Here is the E major Fugue performed by Glenn Gould and Gould discusses the Fugue and its construct before playing it. On the surface, it sounds easy but there are four independent voices and it is actually very difficult to execute as Gould does. He is a total genius. Gould is talking to Bruno while he is playing. This is muscle memory to the nth degree.

\

Below are first four Goldberg Variations 32 in all. In 1955, Columbia Records signed Gould to a contract and he recorded the Goldberg Variations which became the best selling album of the time. In 1981 he re-recorded them. I love the opening Aria. Each variation is a state of mind - interesting.

@Hermes - tomorrow I have 10-15 at my place comparing tube amps. We likely won't be listening to whole tracks, mainly geek stuff of swapping out speakers and amps.
This is a closed forum so we name names, give out phone numbers and buy and sell and swap stuff.
Also San Clemente HS has a record swap going on at the same time.

I saw Rufus Du Sol in concert last night. A 10$ ticket and a venue I could walk to from my apartment turned into quite an incredible show. The rain started to come down pretty hard with about half an hour into the set but the crowd was just super into it. The performance was incredible, the light show was awesome and the music is something I really, really enjoy. Plus it was electronic music played on actual instruments... so that's something!

@ttoc6 @tmonk @doge Something interesting for the more geeky, technical and Bach lovers. A Bach Cannon on a Möbius strip. My teacher sent me this. The Cannon the first time through seems easy right to left with one hand...not so easy backward and then right to left with one hand while going left to right with the other. Bach was totally mathematical and structural. The greatest craftsman of all time.

Started Bach 2 Part Invention 8. Somewhat famous and recognizable.

My teacher attended a masters class where four students were being instructed (not her). The students had prepared Chopin, Liszt, Debussy all from the romantic era. The instructor says, what no Bach. Every student should play Bach for at least 2 years to hone ones skills.

Well, not to move back to the more modern impressionists/romantics, but I just cannot stop thinking of the lovely passapeid (Debussy). It's been stuck in my head all day, as certain melodies tend to do:

Seeing all of this Bach posting makes me want to brush up on my fundamentals @Hermes. Certainly with listening, and possibly playing too! I can't say that I've ever honestly practiced any Bach. I think it would be good for me.

Wilco is playing tonight, but it's an outdoor show. It's been raining for a few hours now and is expected to keep raining until about 4, so the show would be dry. But the ground will be quite wet (er, muddy), it's going to cool of quite a bit, and my wife is fighting a cold, so I don't think I'm going to go. (I have not purchased tickets yet, so my calculus might have been different if I had.)

The easiest Bach pieces are the Two Part Inventions. There are some other works that he wrote for students / children and there are dumbed down versions of the inventions. Number 8 is probably the easiest one to play but it is still hard to learn. I am doing a Czerny Etude that looks really hard but in reality is playable and relatively easy to learn and perfect. Bach looks easy but it seems impossible to put the hands together.

Also, very little of Bach's music has any composer annotations that would indicate speed or dynamics. All we know is that his keyboard works were played on the organ, harpsichord or clavichord. So on a modern piano, one does not use any pedal and cannot use too much volume. Essentially, one is presented with a arguably perfect construct of music that has stood the test of time and can be adapted to the modern keyboard.

Also, just to make it even harder and sound more Baroque and not like a modern piano, one has to play the 1/16 notes legato and the 1/8 notes slightly disconnected but not staccato. Since the 1/8 notes are longer in duration, they have to be struck harder so that the volume is maintained while the 1/16 notes are played. Imagine the 1/8 notes being bowed by a cello and the 1/16 notes played on a flute or clarinet.

Invention 8 does not have any of the Baroque ornaments so that you do not have to learn how to play those.

As a jazz pianist, you may be good at this stuff already. I am working on getting my brain to operate my hands and fingers independently. It almost seems like I need a separate brain for each voice.

@tmonk Here is a video of an interview that Glenn Gould did on the using the modern piano to play Bach. It is quite good albeit long and we rarely, if ever, get insights from professional musicians on the music they play. Gould plays and discusses several Bach pieces including the Chromatic Fantasia that is very un-Bach and more jazzy. He finishes the video with the Partita in D Major that is just outrageous.

The video commences with the Art of the Fugue and then the discussion begins after its conclusion. When you are bored with nothing better to do, this is a great watch.

Invention # 8 is a little harder than it appears. This weeks assignment play each measure until I produce 5 perfect renditions. At least I do not have to do 5 perfect ones in a row. Now I have Invention 8 measures replaying in my head instead of an entire song.

If you guys are really into audio we have had some (4-5) great get togethers in the last few months. Much science. Much beer, Much testing of DAC, Vinyl, tube and SS amps and some really exotic stuff. Reality is nobody is really a cyclist or racer.
But if you like audio, you will not beat what we are listening to. Some (one) of the guys buys a house so they can have different equipment in each room and not disturb the wife. So you have a 1 M $ audio hobby, I expect you can sell it all later. Most of us spend about the average cyclist spend and swap. $150 for a DAC, $150 for a TT - just a lot of barter. But there are some really crazy setups (Altec Lancing 604Bs in a 200 sq ft room). It is amazing to me what a restored vintage amp with new premium tubes can do. The audio IQ is pretty good. Stick your toe in...

@Doge. Sounds interesting. As you know, it is all about traffic on the 5. I can easily make San Clemente from LJ in an hour and change as along as the traffic is reasonable. My current audio set up is pretty cat 5 designed to hide the speakers and support family room enabled home theatre versus a specifically designed room. I have B&O headphones for better sound quality but the feed is digital. Send me a PM when you are going to have the next one and I will try to make it.

One of my neighbors heard me playing piano and said he was a conductor of a chamber ensemble / musician / music teacher. Just what I need another critic. It was all good though.

A very fun. very "Ahmad Jamal" (read: mostly minimal) take on this old-school Jazz standard. Note the Tchaikovsky 1812 overture reference (or "All you need is Love") within the first 20s:
