Started early (7:30) with temps already over 70° for a 16.4 mile easy ride on the trike. Took my time today, cruised around 12mph. Not as much traffic to contend with on weekends. Put a small red blinking light half way up the flag pole. The majority of motorists in Sparks are courteous.

2013–2015: 7022 Miles–Total Avgs: Day 15.8 - Wk 111

31 miles early this morning with a group from a local bike club. The faster group (19-20 average) went for 50 to 80 miles, I think. We were the slower group (15.5 average, but the return trip was all around 18 with a tailwind) and stretched our 22 mile route to 31. Rain was forecast -- and I'm certain will happen -- but we got at least our ride done with all wetness being just sweat.

It's surprising we were even warmer... I would have expected Nevada to outdo Louisiana. It was 80F at 5:30 this morning, with humidity near 100%. But that's summer in the deep south. I guess we're the sauna and you're the convection oven.

A nice ride with two of my buddies, one of which hasn't ridden in a few months due to medical issues. Unfortunately, rain ended our 52 mile scheduled ride at the half way point.

Day 2 of Bike Virginia, in Abingdon. Got 108 miles, probably 7.5K of climbing. Can't tell because my Garmin goes funky in the rain. And we had a lot of rain, on and off mostly for the bulk of the ride. Got super-soaked about 3 miles from the finish line. D'oh!

Another 26 mile ride that started off with blue skies and sunshine but got us drenched before finishing the first lap.

Weather report said the rain would end, started to mist after about 3 miles I keep going the 9 mile ride to the Parkway only to find out they didn't close it do to the bad weather. I rode home in a heavy mist. Got a flat 2 blocks from my house, I walked it and fixed it inside after I dried off.

Had a break in the temp/humidity so I went out for a quick 30 miler. Ten miles out encountered a tree down across the MUP with a local neighbor whittling away at it. I stopped to help and soon there were about 8 of us. 15 minutes and the path was ridable. Nice ride, but the good weather brought a whole lot of people out so the ride was not as quick as I would have liked.

No riding today. Did 65 miles on the tandem yesterday.

Had a bit of technical trouble. I tried rebuilding the rear hub with some moped bearing cones. After only 65 miles they both looked like this.

Back to the metaphorical drawing board.

Tried the Fairview-Marine Drive trail off the Springwater with my sweetie.. temps hitting 80 by 10am. Met a very nice guy named Bob ( a 70 yo very fit/active cyclist) who helped us navigate a poorly marked section. A 30 mile loop, a good training ride. Always impressed with cyclists stepping up to help others.

Bike Virginia, Day 3. I was really beat up after yesterday's 108 mile ride, so i skipped the extra route section today, and ended up with 46 miles. In all the years I've done BV I don't think I've ever not done the longest ride possible. Kind of depressing.

Wow. 5.5 miles of climbing would be 29,040 ft. That means you climbed that 1700ft hill 17 times. An impressive feat!

I just did my commute again this morning. It was nice for several reasons - it was cool, slightly misty and I was riding the Masi.

Encountered one obstacle, a huge oak tree fallen across the Minuteman Bikeway just west of Arlington and completely blocking the path. A lot of commuter are going to be scrambling through the bordering bushes this morning.

It tried to rain the past couple of evenings. I say "tried", in the northwest they wouldn't even call it a sprinkle. For the most part it's not humid here, not even when it "sprinkles".

Beautiful 18.5 mile ride on the Allez - early morning temp at 73°. Warm with a cooling self-made breeze @15mph.
Saw two trikes on the bike path. They are becoming more popular. One a custom made Greenspeed for when the guy was over 400lbs. He's lost 130lbs tricycling. Makes my 73lb loss pale in comparison.

Five casual miles not far from home. In running shoes - my pedals are spd one side and mountain-style platform on the other. Nope, not never gonna give up clipless but the combo pedals are handy.

Bike Virginia Day 4. 64 miles, only 3K of climbing, so relatively flat with a few minor rollers. Beautiful country mostly riding alongside the river.

Cracked the flange of the rear hub and lost one spoke. Had the mechanic (yeah Ed, of Cycles Ed!) true up the wheel as best he could. I'm going to try to finish the rest of the event and see if the wheel holds out. Two more days of riding to go, on a gimpy rear wheel. What could go wrong?

Definitely! I have reversible pedals (SPD & Flat) on both the Allez & Roubaix. I'm too prone to "Senior Moments" (forget to snap foot out) when riding bikes with my feet clipped in. Cracked a rib the last time. So I ride the bikes with high top Fila shoes and the Trike with Serfas MTB shoes with SPD cleats. Not gonna fall over on the trike.

Beautiful morning 20 mile ride @15mph on the Allez - 76° at 7:30am. A little warm by the time I got home at 9:30. Took a short detour to Wally World (WalMart) for aspirin and mini 12v batteries (for the bike Speedo sending units). 300 count 81mg - $4.00. The VA would have charged me $80 for that ($8.00 co-pay per 30 day supply). Cheap blood thinner.

Had my first "GOOD FEELING" ride today on the Giant since prostate cancer cryosurgery 5 weeks ago today.

The day started off with a 0430 bike ride to Walmart on the grocery grabber equipped with dual sided SPD/platform pedals. I use SPD sandals on the bike. Temperature was a bit warm with high humidity.

0810 I was off on the Giant to ride start. 4 miles of trying to awaken the legs with not the best of results. 0830 with temperature at 82F/high humidity the ride starts with 5 other friends. I managed to do a good job of sucking wheels and even took a few pulls. First rider drops off at mile 17 then second drops off at mile 21. Third rider, Bob, drops off at mile 30 and 4th ride pulls off to head home at mile 33 so just Tall Tom and myself left. As we continue on I ask Tom how many miles he's got so far this year and he says he's just shy of 9,000, I'm at 2,350 for the year. Temps by now are pushing 90's and the two of us are slowing down but continue to the stop at the gas station where Bob greats us. He took a short cut to the station after dropping off. Tom and I have 41 miles from the start with a slow 20.3mph average. Just too hot to keep up the pace and I'm still feeling really tired. I meander back home to get a total of 70 miles in with the finish temperature at 95F in the shade.

Bob and I are going out next Friday 7/10 at 0630 for my birthday ride. Hoping for fair skys and a total of at least 65 miles.
