This is the only old pic of it about the time I bought it new . I had crossed a couple years on a Volpe, it's identical geometry as the Zero uno, but a couple mm shorter wheelbase . The Volpe had a toe overlap problem . Ordered the ZeroUno day I read about then . I'll take some close ups later, it's a great ride no matter the parts I hang on it, "all oldschool" or where it's ridden . Onza pedals, when they went away I snagged nuff for the rest of my life, I think . Also stocked up on Mavic rims and XT/DA/Ultegra stuff . Since new I ran a full housing for the r brake . When touring began the rest of the green tape went on . It was waxed, should be very well preserved .

Seriously? No way... The action on that pedal SUCKED. I had some, hated them. I think just about everyone else did, too. You are talking the elastomer spring ones? Those things almost killed me...everyvtime I rode them!

With steel spindles and ti spindles, I use the black elastomers to this day, on all my rides . They're what's on both bikes pictured . One mans meat yanno .

More pics of the ZeroUno
I hope these pics took, the frames been taped since long ago . With quite a few touch ups on the exposed paint . I use cloth electric tape on chain stays, it holds up better IMO . Just put this stem/bar combo on and do like it . Old in the 90's Shimano cantis, 8 speed Ultegra levers, Xt derailurs, with this set of glow in the dark Conti tires, on ancient MA40s . It weighs in at 24lbs .

My latest gravel bike is a 2015 Specialized AWOL Comp frameset (Large) built up with SRAM Force 10 speed shift/brake levers, Sugino OX601 subcompact crankset with 46/30 chainrings, SRAM GX rear derailleur with 12-36 cassette, Avid BB7S brakes, Salsa Cowbell 2 handlebars, Brooks B17 saddle etc. Initially, I ran Stan's Iron Cross wheels with Clement X'Plor MSO 40mm tires (tubeless), but I'm now running Specialized Control Carbon 29 wheels with Specialized Renegade Control 1.95" tires (tubeless).
I've ridden gravel on a few previous bikes. I started with a 2009 Salsa Casseroll, which worked nicely, but was limited to about 35mm tires. Next was a 2012 Black Mountain Cycles Monster Cross which has really been a great gravel bike. I tried a 2014 Specialized Crux Elite EVO, which was a really fun, light and fast bike, but just a bit too low in front and quick handling for my preferences.
The AWOL is definitely the most comfortable bike I've ridden on gravel (with the Black Mountain not that far behind). The bike fits me like a glove. I was concerned about the long top tube compared to similarly sized bikes, but with a short (70mm) stem, it matches my custom road bike. With the tall head tube, I was easily able to get my handlebars about an inch higher than on my road bike, which allows me to use the drop position on the bars more easily when descending on rough gravel.
The bike is very smooth and stable when rolling over rough surfaces. I was amazed how well it handled hitting a stretch of stutter bumps in a curve at 30mph at the bottom of a steep hill on a gravel road. I attribute this to the long chainstays, the skinny, curved seatstays and the steel frame.

Great build. How does the Renegade tire compare to the MSO you were using on the Black Mountain Monstercross bike? I'm looking for a tire like the MSO, but larger and more plush. How wide is the 1.95 Renegade? Is it smaller than labeled?

I also ran 1.8 Renegades on the Black Mountain bike. With tubes on 19mm internal A23 rims, they ran closer to size at 44mm and were much lower volume. They had a very slight traction advantage to the Clements on dirt and gravel and a very slight speed disadvantage on pavement. They are probably very similar to your Small Block 8 tires.

I ran the Renegade 1.8's for a while on my AWOL. They were okay, but didn't last long. I was lucky to get 1200 miles on the set, rotating them half way.
Right now I'm using Kenda Kozmik Lite tires in 29x2.0, and they are much better all around. They roll better on pavement, float over gravel well, handle singletrack like a champ, and last a lot longer. I've gotten 2,000 miles and I wouldn't be surprised if I get another 2,000.
If they made the Kozmik in a 45c, they'd be the perfect gravel tire.

BTW, I'd never rotate a used rear tire to the front. Maybe wear out the rear, move the front to the rear and install a new front.

Thanks, It's a versatile ride. It started as a extreme duty winter bike and now is a drop-bar rigid trail bike. I added build details to the post above.

the closer I look, the more I like it. It looks like every single component is a well-thought solution. How does that weigh in as pictured? 24?

I have the same frame, probably same year. 2010 Origin8 CX700. Very versatile frame indeed. Built/rebuilt mine 3 times now with different focus each time. Makes a nice road oriented commuter bike, great touring rig, and great unloaded trail bike. I do experience some toe overlap issues with my CX700. I see you are running CC forks. I have the Origin8 straight fork on mine. Might make a difference. What size is your frame ? How tall are you and your standover height ?
