Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Interesting.

I like the changes to the FD, particularly the inclusion of the chain catcher.

I'm not real excited by the brakes. Having run Zero Gravity brakes for years, I don't believe it is truly possible to get the same stopping power from a cam-actuated design as dual pivot.

Only thing I am impressed with is the Red quarq crankset. Other than that, meh.

I kinda like the cranks -esp with Quarq...

The brakes on the other hand are U-G-L-Y.

More details: https://www.bikerumor.com/2012/02/01/...er-ergonomics/

So this means the older stuff should go on clearance soon!

Weird...I like all of it. Well the one thing I don't like is that AL large cog. Will wear out too fast.

According to that brochure it says that the new FD is only compatible with the new RED shifter. As far as I can tell my first generation Force front shifter doesn't have a trim option. I wonder if those could be made to work together. I'm happy with my drive-train but would be interested in upgrading the FD and eliminate the chain rub.

Anyone heard about updates to Rival or Force? There's no way I can afford Red on a grad student budget so my attention is on the trickle-down...

Heh, you can almost ALWAYS get Front derailleurs to mesh with any shifter with enough fiddiling. Makes me almost just want to buy a Red FD just so I can take advantage of the new shifting additions (I really like the idea of an integrated chain catcher, an Ode to Andy Schleck I guess)

That's what my plan is. Technically, as long as the amount of cable pull is the same there should be no major issues. So when does it go on sale?

The cable pull will be different and the FD is only compatible with the new shifters. you could probably get it to "work" with previous gen shifters but it won't be ideal

Read the Twitter links. The cable pull is the same and it will work with the other shifters. I already called my LBS and am hoping they can actually get me one soonish.

Looks like they are trying to compete with Shimano in making an ugly crank as that.

Besides the weight and front derailleur improvement, this group falls short for a 2013 group imho.

The crank is stupidly light. 550 grams bb30 included.

That's incredibly, astonishingly light for a mass produced crank.

It's also going to be WAY cheaper than the alternatives, zipp vumaquad, cannondale sisl, lightning/specialized are all $800 or so and about the same weight.

This one is going to be $300 in a year or so.

Also I think it's amazing how light the group is: 1740 grams.

For the next iteration I'm sure they'll lighten the brakes, they're 240g now but I can see them pulling off 200g.
