Old Fart but newbie here
Howdy all from the frigid, snowy mountains of Western.NM, USA,
I am a newbie, as one can tell.
And tells I have. (Tales of course)
Cycled nearly all my life starting at the tender age of about 6.
I am now 75 years of age.
I have just now researched online about "fastest non-drafting times. Appears that 26 MPH is about average. Please advise me if this incorrect.
When I was in my late teens, I worked on farms and road my Schwinn 3 speed, pull chain thru the sprocket type, 6-12.5 miles from my home.
One day on my way home, I state trooper pulled me over. I thought he was going to give me a speeding ticket. He said the reason he pulled you over was because one is not allowed to ride a bike on a freeway. Then he stated that he could not give me a ticket because I was going the speed of traffic. I had just passed a semi-tractor-trailer at about 88.51kph (55mph). Yep, didn't think you'd believe me! No problem. I now wish that I had asked the officer for a written warning in order to collaborate my speed, but I was afraid that my mother would ring my neck! Actually, I didn't even think of it at the time.
I heard that you'd have to be able to go at least 96.56kph or 60mph, in order to enter the Olympics. Being a "Hick-from-the-sticks" and stupidly naive, I didn't think to research for myself, all along thinking that I was not good enough.
Another time on the way to a farm, I passed an army convey. The military vehicles at that time were governed to 45mph. The GI's had a good laugh as I passed them. I remember looking down at my feet; they were a blur. I thought to myself that when I grew older if I would remember this blur or just think I remembered a blur.
Over the years as I road, I have developed sever different techniques for different necessities that would arise. Nope, not gonna tell.
In the latter years, I kept strict records of my daily stats: awakening heart rate, weight, speed, distance, etc, etc. I thereby discovered a fact that indicated if I should train that day or not. True. Wanna know? Nope, not gonna tell.
Ah, the year when a noted winner of the Tour de France set a new time trial speed, I at 57 years old, ran my own time trial over a fairly level 25 mile course. The average speed over the course was about 59.54kph, 37mph; I say "about" because I had to stop for two traffic lights. The actual speed indicated 36mph.

Everyone is fast on the Internet (if they want to be.)
I'll say that very few, even here, can break an hour for a 40K time trial. Most TTs in the US seem to be out-and-back routes, for ease of creating the route, and to prevent all-downhill or tailwind conditions to inflate speeds.

I once broke the speed of light, went back in time and told myself to slow down because it's not a race. I'm a bit upset because I forgot to tell myself to buy Apple stock, and now that I'm older I just can't quite get fast enough now to go back again.

I've had a couple of road bikes that I could ride at those speeds without a problem.

THX! I am proud to one. I have always looked forward to being a senior citizen; reached 50, they change the classification age to 55, reached 55 they changed it 60.....gee
