Eroica California 2019
I have ridden Eroica California (EC) since 2016. Last year, for the first time, I tried the 89-mile Coastal Route with 7000' of climbing but only made it 62 miles and about 5000' befpore getting swept off the course at 5:00 pm.
I understand that EC 2019 may be on the first weekend of April (April 5-6-7) next year but have not confirmed this.
Is anyone else planning to ride EC 2019 in California's Central Coast?
What bike(s) will you ride or show at the councours?
What training strategies work for you?
What routes or qualities of EC do you like the most?

Yes, if last year was any indication, there will likely be several dozen BF members on the ride.
Not yet sure which bike, there are several possibilities...but it will have 32's and a lot of gearing, like a triple and a 34 cog out back.
Ride all winter, indoors on a spin bike or trainer when the weather is bad. Take several 80+ mile rides during the 4-6 week period preceding the event, on the bike, tires, pedals & saddle, and with the shoes you will be riding that day. Ride on gravel as much as you can; hilly gravel is better, steep hilly gravel is best. Know your bike, prep your bike. No surprises- nothing gets changed right before the day of the ride.
I've ridden the Coastal all three times. Great views, fun route, terrific people.

if I do it... it won't be coastal again. That is too brutal on an old bike for me. Nuvo-Eroica (sp?) I can understand. My gravel bike with some wide tires on that route might actually be enjoyable.

The Andy Hampsten group dropped me before the first significant gravel climb and I didn't get to see them pedal over the top�� But at the rest stop, they told me they did. I think andy's bike had some pretty skinny tires: 23s? My plan is to get dropped again but be strong enough to clear those climbs on 25s and my usual 42/52, 13/24. Hope springs eternal from 7 months out.

I did not train as much as I wanted for the Coastal route last year but still did OK. I live in a pretty hilly area, so the topography wasn’t too different from my regular riding. My biggest concern going in was my ability to wrestle a 42 chain ring up the tougher climbs and I trained by seeking out the local 15-20% stingers and working them into rides as much as possible.
If you dig dig up the Eroica Cali thread from last year, there is a lot of discussion on bike set up and there is a lot of precedent for tweaking your bike to make it more climb friendly and less vintage beat down machine. I hope to ride next year, will probably ride my Tommasini again, but also have an Eroica compliant Colnago Super and Moser that might get a nod.

I first rode Eroica in 2016 on my '64 Legnano, 52/42 with a 28t in back. I fell twice (damned toe clips) and walked 3 hills. I skipped '17 with an undiagnosed heart rate issue. This year I returned with a newly built Super Course, Sugino AT triple and a 34t Megarange. I also lost 40 lbs since '16. Even on old bikes, that's almost two bikes! This year I still walked 3 hills with the better gearing and less weight, but I went further before I bailed (made it 3/4 of the way up the hill after Cass). I've only done the short 40 mile course. Its long enough to be challenging, but short enough to be a fun time on the bike. See you all next year! I used Gatorskin 28s in '16 and Pasela 28s this year. Both worked fine.

I took a chance last week and booked the entire Bridge Street Inn through AirBnB- 9 beds, could sleep as many as 13. I already have over half of the slots filled. As we get closer I'll be asking for some deposits. If 9 people share it, it'll be $56 a night. If you're flying in to San Jose, CA I plan on renting a van for the 4 hour drive down to Cambria. Bikes can be shipped directly to the inn. Food and beverage cost can be shared as well.

Assuming the course is similar, I wonder if we will go clockwise. Climbing Cypress on tarmac and descending Kiler would change things up some. I figure that Wes won't send us down pch first thing in the morning but no matter what, the home stretch will have a head wind.

Maybe we go up Cypress first, ride into Paso Robles on Adelaida, climb Kiler, then loop back around to Templeton to get on Santa Rita Rd back to Cayucos.
