YAY! Still got it!
A friend wanted to trail ride, so dusted off the old chromoly GT and went out to ride. Nothing radical-just the usual singletrack with rocks, roots, stream crossing, etc. No log jumps or major drops. Rode around 6 miles. But at 68, I'm happy to still be capable. I was real happy when, after stopping to give my friend a break (doesn't ride trails much), that I actually caught up to some much younger riders who had gone by us. And was real happy, when after the ride, I was talking with another rider who was there. We got to talking bikes and I mentioned all the upgrades I had made on the GT. He mentioned it was probably heavy, and was surprised when he picked it up-it isn't any heavier than many more modern alum. framed trail bikes!! Couldn't have wiped off the smile after that ride!!

My avatar has it listed as a '98, but it's actually a '96 Timberline--the only thing GT on it is the frame (which was a replacement for one I broke), and it has the original Alivio crankset. All else has been changed out. That bike has seen a lot of mtn.bike trails and rail-trails. Even if it didn't perform as well as it still does, I couldn't get rid of it--too many good times have been had and still being had with it!

I'll bet you have some really fun trails in Kentucky! I'm 65 and I still love to ride the mountain bike even though I do most of my riding on the road.

Now, I lived there much longer, so maybe I just knew of all the trails, but it seemed to me that northeast MD/southeast PA has more off-road trails than the Louisville area (north-central KY). May just be that I haven't explored the state and not as familiar with all the different areas. And found out that a friend who road rides with a bunch of us just bought herself a trail bike for her 66th birthday, says shes really having a blast trail riding. Never too late to start!
