Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Endurance bike with 105's

Hi there, I'm upgrading my old Felt Z90, looking for a road bike with an upright orientation, which seems like the Endurance class of frames these days. I'm happy with an aluminum frame, but I'd like Shimano 105's for shifters and derailleur. Ideally I'd like to spend $1,000 - $1,200 for a new bike, but I'm having a hard time finding anything in that price range. I ride 20-50 miles a week, mostly on the weekend. I'm doing a sprint tri in September, and I'll be using this bike for it.

There's a bike shop with a Felt V85 for just under $1500 about 100 miles away from my house. So far that's my best option unless someone here can suggest otherwise.

New? Giant Contend SL Disc 1

I just picked up a 2015 Defy 1 for less than half of your desired budget. It has 105 5800 front and rear. I upgraded the brakes to 105 5800 as well. Great bike.

I have a V85... its a fine bike, lots of fun. 105 componentry is really quite good. Shimano has really narrowed the gap between 105/Ultegra/Dura Ace...

With your budget, you could probably score a nice deal on a used bike and pocket the change...

Have you checked out the Trek Emonda? It comes in an Aluminum frame but for the 105 components it is a little above your budget. I picked up an Emonda ALR4 with Tiagra components and I ride about 200-250 miles a week.

What kind of bikes does your local shop carry? Maybe go in and see if you can test ride a few bikes?

Under $1500 I like the Emonda ALR4 ($1309 MSRP) but it's just Tiagra 4700 groupset. I've seen these in person and I love that matte red color.

Trek Domane S5. Closer to the $2K mark for a carbon frame with full 105 groupset. Probably a sweet spot for performance/value.

Get a used carbon synapse and call it a day. You can get one with ultegra in your price range.

I picked a up 2016 model Giant Defy 1 for $1150.00 in January from an LBS near me. It is my first new bike in about 30 years. See if a shop near you has one on closeout. 105 shifting and aluminum frame. molehillbikes dot com/product/defy-1-disc-2016/

If the Contend SL1 is in your budget I would take a look at it.
Like others have said, Performance would be worth a look especially if you can time buying with a good sale.

Thanks for the suggestions. There's a Performance Bike near me that I'll check out this weekend to do some test rides. Some of the research I've been doing on the 105's is interesting. Seems Shimano has narrowed the gap between 105 and Tiagra. Also some interesting notes on how manufacturers have to compromise in some way to put a 105 group set on a more inexpensive bike.

That was a big reason I went with the Trek Emonda ALR4. It has a full groupset and not a different component setup. I have the Tiagra group on mine and it feels pretty good.

There are lots of great bikes out there just got to see what you like and what fits.

That's a great deal on that Z85. A quick google search turned up a shop in downtown LA with a similarly priced Z85, so I'm going to check it out in person. Thanks!

Hey I live near the area and I'm looking for decent shops, which one are you going to if you don't mind?

I didn't realize Trek did the full groupsets on the Domane, thought that was only with the Emonda.

The Orbea Avant H30 comes with the 105 groupset. Its an alum. frame.

I absolutely LOVE my Avant M40, I wouldn't think the H30 would be much different.
