Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Groupset or Wheelset

guys,

I am using Allez Sprint, with 105 groupset and a standard wheelset on it.

I want to upgrade either one, groupset or wheelset. If I changing groupset, I will save about 350g in Sram Force 22 from current 105 groupset. If I change wheelset to high profile, the bike will look a lot better for sure, perhaps giving some extra speed as well.

I am thinking to do groupset first because the force 22 is not in production anymore. Very hard to source it but I manage to find it now. The latest sram force axs is just too heavy compare to previous version I am getting.

What do guys think? Should I take groupset or wheelset first based on above situation?

For me replacing a groupset is only done when its needed. I would go wheels. It’s nice to have extra set of wheels too.

isn't saving of 350g of weight from 105 to Sram Force 22 big?

Wheels for sure. Force 22 is a step back. You already have a fine group set.

I'd never, ever, ever change from Shimano to SRAM.

But from which wheelset to which wheelset?

I'd probably change tubes and tires first, then handlebars, then wheels.

If you find 105/Shimano in general to be frustrating and want to move to Force because you like the ergonomics more (???), then do it up. If you're doing it primarily for the 350 grams, pass.

No, I don't think its big.

I consider 105 better than Force, but that is my opinion of course. One pound of weight is something like 451 grams so no 350g is probably 3/4 of a pound, that is not worth all the time, money, effort.

I would consider a really nice wheel set a much better upgrade depending what your riding now.

I also don't like getting rid of components before their life is over. Groupsets are spendy so I wouldn't replace a 105 for say Ultegra or higher unless it was not serviceable any longer.

I would never go to SRAM either....not a fan.

Have you done all the high payoff things yet? Tires, saddle, clothes? Any doodads you want like lights or sensors or power meters?

I'd say wheels first.

One plausible reason to upgrade the groupset would be if you are using an older generation 10-speed 105 groupset (5700, 5600, etc.) and believe that you would benefit from having an 11 speed cassette. This might be the case if you run out of gears while climbing or want a tighter cluster for racing.

+1

I also wouldn't upgrade from 105 to Ultegra(unless it's Di2). I would upgrade from 105 to Dura-Ace mechanical if money wasn't a concern, but 105 to Ultegra Di2 would be a better upgrade.

What wheelst do you have now, and what wheelset are you considering? What are you hoping to gain with a new wheelset?

This. 105 is more than fine.
