can i count any 100K ride as a Metric Century?

Can i count any 100 kilometer ride as a metric century or does if have to be an officially sanctioned event? I want to try and see if i can make it for 62+ miles. the MUP in my area is 15 miles "round trip" and so i think if i did it a little more than 4 times it would be about right for the mileage but i wasn't sure what etiquette dictates as far as bragging rights. any help from my fellow big guys (and ladies).

Thanks,
Soon-to-be-wore-out Ryan

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

As far as I'm concerned yes, 100K is 100 K after all. It doesn't have to be an organized ride after all. One ride, 100K is a metric.

I agree. I rode a little more than a metric on Saturday, and it was solo. I would count it.

Funny, I was wondering the same thing! Thanks for asking. I'm going to ride a "clover leaf" pattern with my house in the middle. That way I can get water easily.

In my 18 years of commuting the most I've ever ridden in one day was about 45 miles and that was 11 years ago...

The "official" part only matters if you're trying to qualify for some randoneuring event or bigger ride. Other wise 100K is a metric century. I've done a couple of metric centuries and a couple of standard centuries as a solo exercise in making the distance. With any luck I'll do a third century this weekend. I'm still amazed I can do the distance without feeling like I'm going to die. Two plus years of bike commuting have to be good for something.

I would say an unsupported 100k ride ranks higher than a supported charity ride.

excellent. I'm going to attempt it this weekend. Probably Sunday morning when there won't be much traffic on the MUP. I'll post a followup and let you all know how I did.

One thing to keep in mind is that it is going to be much more difficult to do 100k doing laps than it it would be doing an out and back. At the end of every lap, you have to make the decision to go on or stop. If you do an out and back, you really don't have much choice, unless you want to humiliate yourself by calling someone to pick you up.

I will only recognize your 100k if you send me an application with a $30 fee. With that fee you will not only get my recognition, but a certificate of accomplishment. wink wink, nod nod
