Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The bike I would have built for myself is now a production bike.

A lightweight, aero shaped, alloy framed road bike without a front derailleur.

It also "Dropes the hamer" according to the article.

What is with that huge loop of cable out the back? Is that a normal thing for that groupset?

I noticed that too.

My guess is the top pic is a pre-production bike and didn't have the SRAM Force 1 RD...

The other pics dont have the extra foot of housing.

Why is the rear brake cable zip tied to the top tube?

That is one sweet play. Aside from the resulting improvement in the physical properties of the frame, compared to the bottom bracket on my new Felt Z85 with its rather industrial-looking weld not at all matching the precision look of the rest of the bike this approach is definitely the way to maximize the properties of alloy.

Aluminum is making a comeback. That's a hamer droper for sure. Carbon sucks.

This would be nicer in steel.

I'm not sure you could keep steel light enough using those shapes.

Pretty cool would be nice if they went after the CX market not sure how many "crit" or "fixie" guys would be interested in that top of bike. Just doesn't seem to have the cool factor required.

No front dérailleur is going to drop sales. Either go fixie, or don't. No one likes half way.
Ive been wondering why autoshift hasn't been brought to the market. With electronic shifting, why do we still have 2 shifters?

Fixie guys will be the ones that think it's cool if they want to get into geared bikes. The frame style is exactly what is in for fixies

As welds go, they're awfully nice, and I think the 1x configuration was intentional.

I can sorta dig it, especially the polished version. Too bad it's so Speshal.

You seem to be arguing against yourself. If one shifter is OK, why is one derailleur not? Exactly how would a single shifter operate two derailleurs?

In any event, I for one could go for a 1x11. Effectively it's only five fewer gears than a 2x10 when you discount cross-chained selections, and plenty of folks stay on the big ring in circuit races and on casual rides that aren't too challenging hill-wise.

Would have been all over this had they not left out mounts for a front derailleur. No FD? So those without another well-rounded road bike will be bettwr tuned to riding flats OR hills, but not both. But hey, I have an excuse for bogging up climbs now

Only innovation I see is that two piece BB. Looks like the welds' heat is directed away from the shell itself allowing the BB30 races to maybe stay concentric.

Actually, you can, quite well. Granted, they're nicer than most, but they're painted, and if the welds on this example were painted, too, I think they'd look the same. If you want fine connections, then you want fillet brazed.

hardly arguing against myself, once you understand what I'm getting at. One shifter running 2 deraileurs. With 11 rear & 2 front you could have it choosing when to change the front deraileur for the best ramp up in gears. No need for debating when to switch to the big/small ring(no forgetting either!!!). It will have already figured that out for you. Less thought, better gearing.

They are releasing the 1x11 just in time for Cyclocross.

2x11 model ships in December.
