Trek 950 swapped

Borrowed some parts to make it happen. Surprised to find it had 135mm rear spacing

these are the picked over bones of my Marin Eldridge Grade

Sweet; I think that's a '90, the last year for the lugged frame. And I thnk that's about when they made the jump to 135mm for their 7-speed MTBs. Tall bike with a long stem; my 6'2" buddy could use a bike that size.

Definitely a bike deserving of a repop, but the poor Marin must feel naked; evidently it needs a new home with a shorter owner.

My 1989 Trek 970 has 135mm rear spacing. I believe this is when Trek introduced it to the mountain bike line.

And 1993 was the last year of the lugs.

Hmm, I have a purple 950 that's TIG-ed. I thought that would make it a '91. Maybe it's a '94?

As for the spacing, the changeover probably varied by model, and spanned either side of '90. I have an '89 (black w/teal) 800 that's 130, but it's also a 6-speed.

You can check your 950's year by serial number here:

Trek 950

Is that a new old stock frame? It looks showroom. Nice build, now to get it dirty.

I'm really enjoying my Trek 950's.

Both were that same color and guessing same 22" size as mine.

Both had rough and scratched up paint and are now powder coated.

I think both are 1989 but I only checked one and need to double double the other because in looking in the catalog they used the same color in 1990.

Enjoy your new to you ride.

^^^^^ Look for that color used in nearby years and similar models; that may be significant. My above-mentioned 950, that I thought was a '91, I'm beginning to think it is a '94. Serial number is weakly stricken, but if it is what I think it is, that matches '94. But only the 970 came in sour grape purple (which my bike is) in '94. So there may have been color spec changes mid-year, where they chose colors of other models. Perhaps it was just to use available paint stock. Or in my case, maybe it was originally built and panted to be a 970, but they were short on some component, so they badged it as a 950. YMMV.

There are also component differences between the years. A '91 Trek 950 will have silver Deore LX M550 components (crankset, hubs, brakes) while the '94 will have black M560.

I thoroughly enjoy my 89 White with Red 950 20", but would love it more in 22". I love my 90 Black with white splatter 7000 in 22" (I keep it at work hanging in my cubicle).
