Specialized Sirrus and Trek 7._ FX Riders - please comment
I've test ridden both the Specialized Sirrus line of bikes as well as the Trek 7. FX series. I'm comfortable on both but my concern is long term durability/reliability of the components - shifters, derailleurs, crankset etc.
Specifically, I'm considering the SPECIALIZED Sirrus Sport or Elite OR the TREK 7.3 or 7.4 FX
Which of the above bikes do you have and what kind of experience have you had with it?

I don't own either, but I've upgraded my hybrid (2008 Globe) to resemble the Trek 7.3FX or Sirrus Sport.
They seem to offer the best value/component level for my budget.

I have Trek 7.3 fx but it's a 2012 so I can't really speak to long term durability. But I can tell you what it has needed so far.
It currently has 4968 miles
1385 miles - Replaced the factory chain
1766 miles - Bearing went out of right pedal - LBS gave me new pedals - I only replaced the right one.
3727 miles - Replace cassette and chain
4143 miles - Bearings went out of right pedal again - Replace both pedals
4373 miles - Developed a click at the bottom of the left pedal stroke - Took to LBS and they tightened the bottom bracket. They said it wasn't bad, just loose.
That's all the problems I've had in 4968 miles. No problems with shifting or derailleurs and I never even took it back for my free tune up because it didn't need it. Actually I did have one shifting problem, on 12/04/12 at 3528 miles the front derailleurs got full of sand and mud while riding in the rain and quit working. It worked fine after cleaning it up. I'm still on the original tires, but they are getting worn. I just bought one to have on hand when I need it as the LBS doesn't stock them and had to order it. I got the same kind as came on it because (and I hate to jinx myself) in 4968 miles I haven't had a single flat.

I have the 2012 Sirrus base model. Bought in April 2012 and has about 1500 miles on it. It's been trouble free, except one of the cheapie nylon pedals started making noise after about 500 miles. I replaced the pedals with good alloy models.

I have a Sirrus Elite that is a couple of years old. It has been very good overall. I had a problem with one of the shifters at one point and it was replaced under warranty.

I had a Trek FX for about 7 years before I replaced it with a base model Sirrus in 2010. The reason I replaced it was because the Trek frame was too small for me.
I had no problems with the Trek components and I've had no problems with the Sirrus. My only complaint with the Sirrus is the stock saddle is not comfortable for me on longer rides so I'm looking to replace it.
I replaced the stock plastic pedals on both bikes with Shimano platform/SPD pedals so have not had any pedal issues so far.

At first, I thought all those problems were a bad thing but sounds like not so bad over the course of almost 5,000 miles. Seems like you're pretty happy overall with the 7.3 FX. I might ride around 500-600 miles per year (25-45 miles per ride); mainly paved back roads in decent weather so I wouldn't be racking up the miles so fast.

I have a Sirrus Sport (2012). I have had no problems and I really like it. I test road a Trek7.x when I bought the Sirrus. Both were nice and I don't think you could go wrong with either, but I am very happy with the Sirrus and would recommend it. My only real change was getting Ergon GP-5 grips.
