1986 Schwinn Tempo budget rebuild
I bought this 1986 Tempo for $30 at a bike show two or three years ago. Didn't know anything about the 80's US built Schwinns at that time, but the bike fit me and I couldn't pass on it.
It was in fairly poor shape when I bought it.
I stripped the frame bare, sprayed it with etching primer, and proceeded to lay 6 or 7 (can't remember) coats of Rustoleum Fern Green color. I let the color coat dry about a week between coats, and I wet sanded each color coat.
After applying NOS decals I bought on ebay, I sprayed several coats of clear. (yeah, I know I put the seat tube decals on backwards....oh well).
After the paint was complete, I boxed up the frame to protect it until now.
Today I finally started to build it up and decided to take a pic and start a thread.
I am currently stuck on the BB. I bought a Shimano cartridge BB and I just can't get the drive side to thread in straight....agghhh!

Oh well, I'm a little further along so here's another pic:
I had to re-use the old BB instead of the cartridge BB due to the way the drive side of the shell is threaded. I'll likely end up using a Velo Orange threadless when I can scrap together the cash.

Looks sweet to far.. I restored a raleigh super course with cappella lugs and had an "ex retired auto body man" spray it.. He ruined it the paint never seemed to dry and the clear coat all peeling. Yours looks way better. I did the new style brifters crammed the new wheel set in, not sure if I should have done that.. Kind of dissappointed on the paint job mostly. I should have tried my hand at painting . Thing is need to be all stripped down again witch I had actually done with chemical stripper washed annd fine sanded.and dont know if I want to do again...

Nice bike. A guy here with a Tempo did a complete strip, and had it ceramic-coated, frame saver-ed, and put all new SRAM Apex with a new Vuelta wheels. Amazingly beautiful bike, and he had real problems selling it for $650. I told him to stick to his price and wait, as it was a brand new steel bike for 1/3 of a comparable "new" model. He did and it sold.
If a person can find a Tempo at a good price, they make great re-do's.
