Friction wears the inside of the housing over time. I usually replace the cable and housing together. It's probably been a while since you've replaced the housing, so I'd replace both.

You might have rust that fell or was pushed down into the cables. I use stainless cables, they don' t rust. There could be scraped places that create friction too. I tell people to replace the housing too. Some of my friends, tried not replacing the housing, Each one of them regretted that decision.

Stainless steel can absolutely rust under the right (wrong) conditions, it just takes longer.

So far, my Ultegra 8050 shifters are working fine on the 6770 derailleurs.

If those have an old firmware, that's why it'll work. I think, unfortunately, that if you get a late-model 6770 RD you'll find it won't communicate.

I may be wrong, but I think it's all in the battery programming. Heck, who knows. I plugged it all in, charged the battery, and went for a ride. This one has the newest seatpost battery, and the other two have the external.

do you guys take y’all’s cassettes completely off to clean them? if so how many miles? I have a cassette cleaning brush with degreaser but I never can get it perfectly clean. I didn’t know if taking it off and soaking it in gasoline is a good idea..... if i sound like an idiot please let me know.

I take it off, throw it in my cheap ultrasonic cleaner, finish it off with a rag with brake clean on it.

is this once a year, 1000 miles, 500 miles or as needed kind of thing.

I have the tools but I have the lack of confidence and the fear If i take something off I will A. break something, B. won’t get it back on the same as it came off.

I replaced only cables for many years, and it ultimatey got through my head to do both. Then I bought a bulk roll of housing (brake housing for brakes and shifters. Blasphemous I know, but the shifter housing was unreasonably priced). I think it was a cable actuated top normal fd, which finally convinced me it made sense.

Cassettes only go on one way. They are very dufficult to break. Of course they do come apart, so it's nice to get the spacers and cogs in the correct order. But you're a pilot. Practically a rocket scientist. It should be second nature.

It's been several years and I don't remember what the guy used, but I thought it was a good cable brand. I noticed the top was was a bit discolored, but I didn't pay much attention until a few weeks a ago when I went on the first ride requiring the front derailleur in a few months. I shifted and nothing happened. Oy. Got home and found rust. I WD-40ed it and it shifts for now, but probably should replace, eh?

I just had a Remicade infusion on Friday. My knees are better, but I've still got noticeable inflammation on one, which is a bit worrying. Maybe it just needs a few more days. I've reached the infusion point because the easier drugs aren't cutting it. And if this doesn't work, well, there's only so many drugs to try.

I mounted a road bike, this morning, just to see. I didn't need to put any weight on the shoulder; just straightening the arm was enough. At least another week. One of my three therapists is suggesting age, and wear and tear might have something to do with it. Wtf? Or as we day in Spanglish, Qtf?

I do it when I don't like the looks of it. If I change it due to race needs, I'll certainly put a clean one on, and clean the take-off to be ready for the next use.

I'm an auto tech, and I had a fear of working on my bike, until I put my big boy pants on. I do use a torque wrench on my stuff, and the usual obsessive/compulsive type stuff that is sort of normal for me. If I laced up a wheel and saw different colored spokes and stuff a la seedsbelize, I wouldn't be able to sleep until it was dismantled, and everything weird put away, and marked accordingly. Of course, I would never ever throw it away.....

Per cable. There is a bit of a discount (10% IIRC) to do the whole bike - brakes and shifters.

If I can't get it clean with soap and water, then I take it off and throw it in a parts washer.

I do not recommend using gasoline.

Kids and I are out and about in Richmond and I just got word that my FIL finally passed.

Sad, obviously, but I think there's some relief being felt, too. He'd been bedridden and incoherent for days. I know that the long, mostly sleepless overnights were taking a toll on my wife, too, and she was growing resentful towards her mother and brother because of the division of duties, etc.

I suppose we'll be here at least a few more days to help my mother in law navigate this new stage.
