It's more of the right tool for the job. Commuter, fat bike. full sus mt bike, errand/grocery getter, and bikepacking rig. All different. Everyone needs a hobby? Exercise, stress relief, theray, escape. All good.

I have about 25 bikes. 14 are in rideable condition with the other 11 in some state of repair or disassembly (waiting for custom build ups!). I believe that I do have all of the original components of the disassembled ones (plus boxes of "spare" parts or potential upgrade components). I did give one BMX bike away last week (not part of the current count) and I have 2 on loan to my daughter. Those aren't in the count either but I expect them to be returned when no longer wanted or needed 😉.
Of the rideable ones, 2 are my wife's but I bought them and maintain them. A few of the others are for when guests visit and want to ride the local trails. Much to my wife's dismay, a few are pretty much never ridden (but could be). During their "rehab" phase, I "bonded" with them and can't seems to part with them 🙄.
I will say that most are not high end bikes but none are "big box" gas pipe cheapies. Only 4 were purchased "new" with the rest being thrift shop specials, private party buys and/or dumpster finds / trash day pickups! Some needed/still need extensive work but some just needed a "fluff & buff". I'm not happy to admit it but 25 bike might just be too many 😬. I've yet to say this in public tho 😉. (But maybe now I have &#129300.

It is nuts that you only have one mountain bike and no gravel bikes.

The AMERICAN thing is not so much having more than you need, as it is not allowing anyone else to decide what those needs are. I thank God for the freedom to decide how I live my life rather than being told what to do by anyone else.

No such thing as too many bikes. I'm trying to find a third for myself! I currently have 2 bikes, a Bianchi Imola 2003 road bike and a Jamis Durango 2010 mountain bike, and am hoping to find a vintage bike worth refurbishing!

My current collection is a Lemond cross, Cervelo road, Cannondale mtn, and a RANS recumbant. Want to get a fat tire.

So I say FIVE.

I have 5 without owning any mountain, gravel, carbon or electric. Sad!

Having four bikes IS nuts!

That's more than you need functionally but not nearly enough to satisfy your collector craving. It's the worst of both worlds.
