The knee is doing well - just working on massaging the scar tissue daily hoping it will go down. I still can't kneel down with that knee but since I don't need to do that to ride I don't really worry about it much.
We're stuck with an inversion layer keeping the cold air and freezing fog in the valley. I was in Seattle twice this week for work and it was fantastic - dry, sunny and in the 40's. You don't see that very often in January for that area.

Was going to take a long ride this morning...then remembered that my Bridgestone's RD, a Suntour 5000 Alpha, was acting up...so....first things first....cleaned, inspected, and found the spring tension on the cage was wonky. It took about 10 seconds to SLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWLLLLLYYYYYYYY pull the chain back tight after flexing it forward. NOT ideal. Grabbed down a bike off a hook that hadn't been ridden in a while, the old 81 Takara, and swiped it's 5000 alpha. Installed it, adjusted it, and did a quick 10 mile check ride. Cool, low 60s, stiff wind out of the North. Got home, pulled apart the old RD, found the pin on one end of the tension spring had bent over, so bent it back...got it working again. It's nice to have spares about.

It's nice to see you out and about in this cold weather Jim. The best way to keep a bike clean is to add fenders, but I know you're a bit of a weight weeny, so I'm not gonna bother bringing it up.

Great shots, Yokev. That does look like a lot of fun.
I finally got to the point today that if the freezing fog won't go away I'll just have to ride anyway. Visibility at it's worse was about 1/4 mile so with the bright "yellow/green" jacket I felt ok. Low traffic anyway. 23 degrees for the ride with frozen ice on the jacket by the time I got back. Was on the Trek tank with 1.75" tires. Makes for a tough ride when you're pushing the same gear as the road bikes but with more surface contact between the tire and road.
View at the start. I was stupid on Tuesday (after making it through these short icy sections 4 times the week before) and tried to go through - very slowly - and discovered how quickly a bike can disappear under you when the tires slip out on ice. Live and learn - that one definitely hurt.
Eagles are back in the area waiting for calving season which has started in one pasture that I saw but will really start in February.
Horses and fog - made for a peaceful photo

I could have just pulled my 02 FELT down off it's hook and ridden it...but the whole ride....I would have been pondering JUST WHAT was wrong with my trusty C&V, Hot Pink ride!

Today someone with the Frederick Pedalers decided to schedule a 40-50 mile ride, so I decided to take the Alpine out for another spin today. This was also one of the last opportunities to go for a ride with Mike (puchfinnland) before he heads back to the cold north.
The temperature at the start of the ride at 9:30 AM was 33° and I was a little cold at the outset, but warmed up pretty quickly once we started rolling. In any case, Mike discovered what the hills are like around Frederick County. By the end of the ride the temperature had managed to make it to nearly 55° and we had managed to put in 47 1/2 miles. All in all, it was a good day despite the fact that one of the guys on the ride managed to go missing and we needed to find him.

You gonna eat that?
A chilly morning turned into a warmish day, so I was shedding layers during my 46 mile breakfast ride.
Here is my bike parked at the coffee shop
...and a pic or two near Texas Christian University (TCU)
It was a weird route, in that I rode much of it twice. I rode to meet the bike club, then later in the ride, retraced a good part of that path, then retraced more of the bike club route on the way home.

It,s all good and it doesn,t piss me off. The hills around here often catch flatlanders by surprise! BTW, I still say it,s the engine, not the bike. I was in a very similar predicament last year when I went on a ride with rhm, RobE30, nlerner, fender1 and a few others from the forums here. I actually went and sat out part of the ride with lostarchitect while they continued onward and upward.

Yesterday was incredible January weather for these parts, hitting somewhere around the 60 degree mark. I began the day on my Gazelle, heading west into moderate headwinds through farm country with an every-once-in-a-while riding buddy. He was done after twenty or so miles of rollers, so we parted and I headed back for a quick bite. I swapped out bikes in order to give the International a good shakedown ride, this time heading south toward the Missouri River. It's all rollers, gradually descending to flatlands and then just as gradually climbing back into the rolling "foothills" that mark the southernmost tip of ice age era glaciation in this part of the state. I stopped once for a short photo session before turning back into the hills (and the headwinds). I never really clocked the miles until later that evening and realized I'd missed completing a metric by just shy of 2.2 kilometers. (If I'd known that, I would've ridden around the block before putting the bike up.)

No pics worth showing but we got in 22.5 miles on the tandem today. 50degF, a bit warm for this area in January, innit? Also verrrry windy. But we'll take it!

40.63 miles today. Scituate-Glocester-Harmony-Scituate RI. I took the Cinelli because I had a chunk missing from my conti rear sprinter tubular. I just received a pair of Vittoria corsa cx from wiggle this week which I'm going to install on the De Rosa.
Similar conditions to what Jim reported; 50 degrees and super windy here in RI. There were white caps on the Scituate Reservoir.
Cinelli at Harmony RI in front of Peeptoad Pond.
soft ice
Scituate
Northbend that's a serious looking trail. It looks like something out of a magazine!

One of the CR list members is also a member of my old cycling club in Westlake Village. He's organized a quarterly vintage bike ride through the scenic Hidden Valley. It was a great excuse to make a a road trip, see some family, and enjoy a ride through my old stomping grounds.

No pics but...
The weather was sweet, and I got out again today.
early in the ride I faced a big long uphill, I started pumping up the hill when
woosh!
some good looking 40 something woman on a lugged frame with Non indexed shifters passed me uphill.
(Future riding partner !?!?)
this upset me and I went in hot pursuit
well I got to see only her backside, and we briefly talked,
she has a triple, and a 28t on the back, compared to my 42-26
(Eyes were focused on the gears)
when we reached the summet i asked which direction she is heading....
she turned around and said now back to the bottom and up again....
(no, I don't think a new riding partner, she is in to S&M!!!!)

Nice to be able to post once again to one of my favorite threads here. Yesterday was a balmy 75F and I finally got the chance to take my Bianchi Premio out for a short 15 mile shakedown ride. Being off a bike for 3 months took its toll on the legs. But it was fun nonetheless. No notable routes, just bike lanes through a few neighborhoods with Red Mountain basking in the afternoon sun. I did a few laps with some short climbs to test my legs, and survived. The Bianchi rode very smooth compared to my AL Trek daily rider I used to have. The Accushift drivetrain performed crisply after I swapped the existing 6-spd Uniglide chain for a modern narrow 9-speed chain. (Thanks for the suggestion, GlennFordx4!) It was making a heck of a racket before.
The only surprise was the poor braking performance. I installed a pair of short-reach Shimano 105 SLR single-pivot brakes I was gifted with by Irvri. These are the 'mighty powerful 105's' Sheldon Brown loved. I was expecting decent braking, but I got no stopping power at all. The brake pads are original, and I sanded them down before I installed them.
I paired them with my current favorite levers....a pair of NOS Tektro-made levers I found at the shop and bought for 10 bucks! They look identical to the Tektro R100/200a.
After setting up the brake calipers, I notice that there is a 4-5mm gap between pad and rim wall when I have the levers set to the desired pull travel I like. That's more gap than I've seen with my past brake set ups...conventional, aero, single and dual pivot. My only conclusion is possibly these levers are for linear pull brakes. But I don't recall Tektro making a set in the past with this body/lever style. I will have to iron out this mystery.
Overall, I managed to make this 53cm frame to fit me and the bike feels great!
