I think you need to split up the first choice. In my world recreational and fitness riding are entirely different activities. When I ride with my wife and/or friends of ours around town that is recreational riding at a snails pace. When I ride for fitness, it is usually all out for 15 to 20 miles on the hills around here when the wind is favorable. When the wind is just too much, I ride in town but as fast as traffic will allow without getting run over at intersections.

I screwed up. I was gonna check what did you forget too. I only checked pace line and recreational.
The real reason is to gain back and retain heart function. I lost about 35% of my heart function due to a heart attack last year. Doc told me to exercize to regain lost function. I will never get back the lost/damaged heart tissue. But through regular exercize I can gain back by strengthening what is left.
It's been rough. Many times on club rides I thought my heart would jump out of my chest. I've since got a Heart rate monitor. And now can keep a closer watch on how hard I'm pushing my ticker. I'm stronger and can go longer by watching my HR.
I enjoy riding for the fun of it. I also like to go on club rides as I enjoy the commeradery with like minded people. But the real reason in purely medical.
