Bonjour from Normandy

Hello! I'm a European, born in England and currently living in Normandy.

I somehow managed to get made redundant for the third time last year and decided I'd had enough of working, so took an unexpectedly early retirement.

I have cycled and camped all my life (my parents took me cycle touring a few months before I was born and camping on the Isle of Skye when I was three months old), but haven't ever combined the two. For the past 20 years I've mainly focused on MTBs, but with the lovely quiet roads in France it's time to switch focus.

I've cycled using YHAs and camped using motorbikes and 2CVs, so have lightweight gear, but hope to start cycle touring later this summer (I have a three-month road trip with my 2CV van May - August first) and perhaps a longer tour next year.

If anyone is passing through the départment of Calvados in Normandy, I have space for a few tents and some spare beds too and am happy to welcome some fresh faces!

Welcome to Bike Forums. Glad you joined us. You might meet some locals in the Europe subforum or the UK subforum. You can find touring information in the Touring forum. Have fun.

Kind offer! Soyez le beinvenue aussi. I've cycled through that region. There is some serious climbing there. I think Normandy and Brittany as well has fantastic bike riding. Actually France in general I think may be the best country to cycle in.

Welcome aboard, that's a very interesting story about your situation. The solution you chose seems like a nice way to spend a retirement to me. Best wishes on your riding and on life in Normandy now.

Bill

Hi Jacques! Welcome! I need to ask you one question: When you were 3-months old and camped on the Isle of Skye, did you have your own, tiny tent? Cool!
Thanks for your kind offer, and I hope you find some perfect cycle-touring opportunities. Thanks for the Guerande salt!

No, but my parents used to have a (pre-war) tandem and I had my own sidecar to travel in.
