New 700 Multi Track Project Bike
I just picked this up on Craigslist for about $60.
From what I have found it's a '93?
I wanted to get schooled on working on bicycles so this is my lab rat.
If things work out, I'll use this for commuting my 2-1/2 mile commute (when I go back to the office - TBD), as a back-up and loaner.
The frame is solid (not pretty), pedals and shifts surprisingly smooth, wheels seem solid (tires will last for test rides, etc).
It's got grime, but no rust.
I'll take everything apart, clean it all up, learn how to reinstall & adjust, and replace items that need it.
I'll have to consider the frame. There are lots of chips, but I like the original graphics.
Either manual touch-up (lots of it - unlikely), full media blast/refinish, or mix of blast/refinish & mask/manually clean up the graphics areas.
I'm not technically knowledgeable about bikes, but hope to come out the other end of this having earned a few chops.
I'll post more pictures, details, etc.

Came to bikeforums for other reasons entirely (lots of great info here as I consider purchasing/fixing up an old road bike) but loving this thread!
I have a 2001 (I think) 700 (year based on the color after some online research - a darker grey to light grey fade). Seems like it's a bit more of a recent model than would be exciting for you all to own, I gather because it has an aluminum vs. steel frame? It also has some really funky Shimano shifter display dials, no idea if those were original. Anyway it's a Frankenstein's Bike of the co-op where I purchased it and then the second co-op that helped me fix it so not worth the picture I'm not yet allowed to post, but I'm enjoying reading about your Multitracks

I've been looking for awhile for a Multitrack Trek 750 or 790 lugged bike 19", but I'm not having much luck. So I have widened my search to additionally include 520 and 720 Touring bikes. Multitrack 750/790 are much like the 520 except for the unicrown fork on the Multitrack. The 620/720 Touring have more prestigious steel eg 531 and the 720 Touring is a rare grail bike with long chainstays for touring.

This is the 1992 790 I've been rambling on about. It came almost 100% stock from what I can tell. These images were taken after a good shine up and removing some things off of the frame like fenders, a kickstand, and a rear rack.
I have a few hundred miles on the frame now and have made a large number of component changes including a drop bar conversion. Here are some stats/thoughts that might be useful/interesting to others:
Bike details:
1992 Trek Multitrack 790, 21 inch frame.
Sizing:
I would say the 21 inch frame it is on the large end of fitting well. If I had to guess the 19 inch frame might be on the small end of fitting well. I am 5'9" with about a 30.5" inseam.
Weight:
26lbs as pictured (stock)
Wheel spacing:
Front: 100mm Quick Release
Rear: 135mm Quick Release
Side note: I am using a 10 speed 130mm rear wheel right now on the frame and it seems to be running fine. I may try to have a custom wheelset built around the original spacing of 100/135.
Tire clearance:
With fenders: I would guess max width to be around 35mm with fenders. Go with 32mm to be safe.
Without fenders: I have a pair of semi slick 38mm tires on the bike now with clearance for more (but no clearance for fenders). I will likely attempt to fit a pair of more aggressive ~40mm tires at some point for more heavy duty trails/gravel. I doubt anything more than ~44mm will fit.
Seatpost Diameter:
26.6mm
Ride Quality:
Great

I have not had the chance to perform a proper "photo shoot" post conversion - Too much time on the bike I guess. I will certainly provide an update with images but it still might be a week or two.

Found this locally on the cheap. It's steel with a chromoly seat tube. The weight difference is really noticeable from my other all chromoly 700s.

Recently on my local craigslist I saw what looked like a Trek 750 that had a colorway I couldn't quite date. It appeared black with white and blue decals. It had the '3 dot' multitrack logo that looks to have been used from 1992 to 1994. More importantly it was lugged which would make it a 1993 at the oldest.
Vintage-Trek has listed for those years:
92, white with red decals
93, lunar to black fade with white decals
94, ice violet to ice indigo fade with white decals
The easy answer would be that it's a 1993 but it really looked solid black. Anybody have any thoughts? Was there an alternate colorway offered in 1992 or 1993 that wasn't in the catalog? I'd post a link to the craigslist listing but it appears like someone already snatched it up....

I have a 91 white letters blue shadow on black frame. 3 dots I am not conscious of will have to look at home. Is it a graphic near the word "Multitrack"?

Recently posted in the introductions forum and am also posting here to shamelessly get my post count up. With everything going on in the world I recently gave into my long lingering urge to get back on a bike for the first time since my youth. After spending some time lurking on this forum and specifically this thread, I decided a trek hybrid is probably the best choice for me. After only about 2 weeks of searching, a 1992 Trek 790 popped up on OfferUp which was a little under an hour away. It wasn’t a crazy bargain, but I feel like I got a reasonable deal considering how long I had to wait and the craziness of the Covid market. I picked it up yesterday and couldn't be happier. The blue is incredible and actually feels comfortable for my 5’6” height, which had been my hurdle up to this point.
The bike seems to be stock. Knowing next to nothing about working on bikes I’m not sure were to start, or if it really even needs major upgrading immediately. I think I’ll start with getting a new seat and a water bottle holder.
I’ll post images once I’m able to.

I'd like to get brown leather grips but I haven't found any I like.
I also have a more beat-up 1992 790 that I'd like to do a drop bar conversion if I can teach myself how to do it. Recently picked-up a 1991 750 for my fiancé though she's yet to ride it....

It is currently a 1x10 setup running a 40t in front with a 11-32 cassette in the back. I plan on continuing to tweak out the build in the coming months/years and will likely end up ultimately running 2x10 with a different wheelset.
Also - I will not always be running aerobars, but I am considering entering into a gravel race next weekend and was giving the race specific setup a try.

I am the original owner of this '95 730. It had been mostly hibernating for a long time, but I woke it up a few months ago.
After learning that the original FC-MC12 crank arms were under a voluntary recall from 1997, I replaced them with some used FC-MC16 arms (keeping my original chainrings).

So over a period of time I have been reading on this forum about Trek Multitrack bikes. I have enjoyed the read a lot. One thing I have not seen is any talk about the Trek 750 using lugged assembly versus welded frames. Is there anybody out there that has ridden both methods of assembly and can comment about the ride quality? Thanks, Nelson

Yes it is. The bike shop had it on clearance 12 years ago or so, so I bought it. I got the bike through as a work prize in 2003. In 2008 or 2009, I stripped it to the frame and and start buying parts here and there, mostly on eBay. If I recall correctly, the Shifters and Derailleurs were XT, Brakes\Crank were LX. XT hubs on the Velocity rims, and a 105 12-25 cassette. I live in Florida, so don't have to worry about hills, jagwire housing. It was an awesome ride.

There's a lugged 750 in DC for a good price. I have absolutely no connection to this seller and cannot assist with inspection or purchase, but if you're close by -- it looks like it's worth looking at.
