I do try to minimize my interactions with motorists, as well.
I try to use smaller roads that parallel, or closely follow, main roads.When taking main roads, I try to use those with dedicated bike lanes to minimize commingling with traffic.

That keeps me moving along relatively efficiently.
And since I'm biking for exercise and enjoyment, a little extra distance is a blessing vs. a curse.
