Shimano's great new thing is to make us all more scared about riding. Offering a new and supposedly more protective helmet? They would get some more props from me for announcing the Shimano "Safe cycling roads" and working with cities all over the world to build better cycling infrastructure. I guess that doesn't make them any more money, despite the ongoing death toll. Sigh.

I gotta say the earth shattering announcement was far less impactful than I anticipated. If it weren’t for this thread I would have never noticed it. In fact I’d probably see one of those helmets when they eventually make it to LBS shelves (or now sadly REI) and think “hey now Trek is copying Smiths”

I'm so old I can remember when Trek was a cool company.

You mean I have to pay attention? As someone above said, I also can remember when Trek was cool. In fact sitting right in front of me is a beautiful blue Trek 1500 that I bought for my wife that is now in service for daughter number 3. Including Biopace!

Keep in mind that Trek WaveTech isn't new or revolutionary.
Koroyd has been around for years. Smith has produced ski, skate and cycling helmets using Koroyd for at least 3 years.

Bontrager is keen to distance WaveCel technology from the honeycomb shaped materials used in some helmets. That's presumably a reference to Koroyd, as used in Smith and Endura lids."[These materials] primarily address linear impacts to prevent skull fractures," says Bontrager. "These systems usually include a slip liner to the helmet to address rotational forces. WaveCel addresses both linear and angular impacts but also flexes to make a uniform dome shape that wraps mostly around the inside of the helmet."

The direction Trek is taking could be huge for them if they can get a patent on the technology. Unlike the Smith Koroyd helmet that has a honeycomb pattern and is made for more linear impact this new WaveTech technology from Trek is a crucial advancement in concussion technology. If it really works and reduces the spin/shearing motion upon an angled fall they could change everything including football helmets, shin pads...I even see a military use if it's made from other materials like Kevlar.
Anyone that is poopoo'ing this may not remember when Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight started hawking running shoe soles they made with Bowerman's waffle maker from the back of their cars at track meets back in the mid 1970's. People thought they were nuts. When Bowerman's Oregon track team started to do really well the soles took off. They changed the running industry. We ended up with the Nike Corporation.

This new product from Trek could be that big.
