Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A bicycling friend, Ghost Rider (Scotty), mentioned that he would like to ride a bit with me on a night ride before he heads back north. I rode 130 miles on Tuesday and figured I had one more night ride this week before he leaves on Monday so I texted him to inform that last night was a "GO FOR ME." I'll let him know at my 50 mile mark and he can join in or not. I had a couple of very brief "Cat Naps" yesterday and since my plan was for a 100 miler I made sure to have another from 9:30PM to 10:15PM then got things together and out the door at 11:11PM. Wind was higher than reported so got behind on distance/timing but notified GR at the 60 mile mark and he joined in around 3AM for about an hour. He had the LBS morning ride planned so back home he went and I continued on. Mile 112 was was my first and only stop, comfort break and bottle fill then back out with perfect timing to join the LBS ride at 8AM at my 141 mile mark. Hung in for a few miles then bugged out and made it home. Totaled 151 very close to home miles and feeling not too bad right now.

18 miles Friday, 33 miles Saturday. That's about all the fun my achy neck and shoulders can stand for now, although regular PT sessions are helping.

I intended to take it easy on the 33 mile Saturday ride, mostly because it was unseasonably hot and muggy with stiff wind, and heat adaptation takes a few weeks. I took the bike computer off the bikes so I just go by how I feel. Turns out my average speed was the same as my previous maximum efforts, so my "feels like" gauge and actual conditioning are a little out of sync now. That seems like a good thing.

And another very casual 8-9 miles Sunday evening, just to wake up after a too-long nap.

Sunday - Finally a free day with no rain. Got in a little under 27 miles on the Ribble today. Had put a tubular setup on it about 2 weeks ago but this was the first time I actually got it out. Really nice out this morning and all the rain has things greening quite nicely.

Saturday was no riding for me. I've been putting up with knee pain for a long time when I drive. I finally gave up on it and traded it in for another used car I can be comfortable in. Took me all day to find the right deal so no time to ride.

70k today. My first ride with the club this year and my first club ride in over 7 years. Was good getting back to riding in a pace line and meeting new people. Ride ended up at a coffee shop! Awesome weather and a great day.

My gf and I did 30.6 mi. w/1900 ft elevation yesterday. Heat and headwinds were the conditions. A good ride nonetheless. (https://www.strava.com/activities/2399671335). Meeting friends for 25 today and a cookout.

Lots of riding this past week! Recreational rides and some errands put it up to 237 miles.

Monday: Women's shop ride - with 14 women for the bulk of the ride! With a few newer people, we kept a moderate pace of 15.1 MPH; I nearly broke my previous speed record and hit 47.2 MPH 27.2 miles, 1,250'.

Wednesday: Windy solo ride (south wind ~20 MPH). Accidentally took a climbing PR (into the headwind!), blew around on the ridge, then caught the tailwind for a zippy 11 miles back into town. 33.4 miles, 1,549', 16.7 MPH average.

Thursday: Newer shop C ride, plus to and from; good easy steady miles. 47.5 miles, 1,640'.

Sunday: Brilliant day for cycling; perfect weather!

First, a group ride + to/from for 71.2 miles, 3,081', at 17.3 MPH average. The group portion averaged 18.3 MPH for 58.5 miles, and I was proud of myself for hanging on and taking my turns pulling.

Second, a quick evening stroll over to Minnesota (where the drivers are smart and take their ATVs to the bar...unlike Wisconsinites who drunk drive their big trucks.) 28.5 miles, 1,135'.

Another 27 miles Monday to finish out the long weekend. Good ride until near the end when some jerk decided to harass me. Or maybe he was offering to give me a Memorial Day hamberder, covfefe and cookie. Dunno. Road was straight and clear for hundreds of yards either way, he had plenty of room to pass safely, but decided to lane split while leaning on his horn. Then he stopped in front of me and tried to cut me off when I tried to pass him. Maybe it's just a string of bad luck but something like this has happened on almost every ride the past couple of weeks, including on group rides. I blame global stupiding.

Another day, another jackass.

Saturday got to do something a little different. I was helping my daughter pack for a move and rode my bike over to St. Petersburg. It was a one way trip since my wife was joining us later to help and I would be riding back with her. I went downtown and then on the Pinellas trail for a bit. Good ride for 43 miles. Sunday did the usual Picnic to Davis Is. route for 41 miles. Monday bonus holiday ride also Picnic to Davis Is. for another 41 miles. I'm pretty happy that my legs seem to be doing okay and I'm handling the heat so far. It is above average temps right now. I'm hoping I'm getting in condition for summer.

Had a good time cycling on a no-car island only accessible by ferry with my wife & daughters, the oldest soon to be moving to Seattle.

This restaurant has probably $3000 worth of dollar bills with good luck or some meaningful message written on them by patrons hanging on the walls...why didn't I get a pic of that ! A nice trip
