I did a relatively short (31 miles), but relatively steep (over 2,000 ft of climbing) ride today, mostly to prepare for the climbing in store at the Magical Mystery Tour of the PNW at the end of this month. The Boston area isn't terribly flat, but it also doesn't have any real extended climbs, just a few short, steep ones. Today's was up to the top of Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, MA, just south of the Boston line.

Definitely a day for dodging the downpours and showers.
Finally rode the fendered AD. Been a couple of months.
If riding toward the Cascade Mts the chances of rain increased, so head for the sunny spots downhill.



Soooo comfortable these tall headtubes, makes the drops a dream for fast cruising.

Just rode to work today, but this scene greeted me when I hit the Lakefront Trail on the way home. The resulting ride was a bit chilly until I got a bit off the lake on the Chicago/Evanston border.

In honor of National Doughnut Day my son and I rode to a local orchard for warm apple cider doughnuts. Luc bought a dozen to take home. Good thing the old guy had room on his bike.

Nearly every neighborhood jaunt takes me past the corner shopping center, anchored by the ice skating rink, locally owned gym (no pics) and legendary Doofers Bar & Grill.

I am especially proud to live in an area where folks still give things away for free.....

My long ride this week was "the day of the dead" and a beautiful day it was. The sky one stainless blue and mid 70s, land in full flower, not enough wind to fill a hat. The best of spring weather. The Crescent took me along the Schuylkill River towards Manayunk and Philadelphia but we swung off to take the Manayunk bridge over to the west bank and the Cynwyd Heritage trail then into the West Laurel Hill cemetery. We took a break to remove a layer and eat one of my world renown and universally maligned Cheerio cookies. Good fuel though.

As we rested in the warm sun, one of the caretakers came by, black suit, black tie, black shoes and white shirt. We chatted a bit and I remarked how nice it was that they welcome cyclists to quietly ride through their property. Respect for the residents though. I asked him "How many dead people are there here?"

He rubbed his chin a bit and pondered. "All of them."

Says I - "don't quit your day job."

Glad to see y'all were out riding while I was away on vacation.

I took the '77 new-to-me Gazelle out for 46 miles today. It's a superb speed bike but I have to track down an issue with the BB bearings.

I went out on a short one on the new Ironman this morning. Also on 23s. I was a bit concerned about all the hype, but it all proved true. What a delightful ride that bike provides!

Picked up a 1920s Sunbeam from Greenwich and rode it back to Liverpool Street Station
Riding a bike in London 40 years ago was suicidal. Today it is much safer.


Burberry coat and a Silver Sunbeam on London Bridge. Worth a pint and some.

44 miles today, my longest ride on a just completed '78 Super Course. We rode from Camarillo down the coast to Malibu. We stopped at the Hueneme Navy Missle Park for a regroup just as a bunch of exotic cars cruised in. I only got a few pictures, nice cars. After two shakedown runs, the old Raleigh rode very well, the 52/42t crank and Megarange 6 speed performed very well. $20 Craigslist project turned out to be a nice ride. Mid 60s, foggy at the start, 75 and sunny at the finish, 100° when I got home. Ended up with a 17.3 mph average, best ever on that ride!

Pulled off 62 hours at work this week, so what do I do with my day off? Pull a ton of weeds, plant some sweet corn, and ride 42 miles! I took a pit stop near Navelencia by the Friant-Kern Canal to grab some photos on the bridge then jammed home. Now I'm exhausted... The old Frejus Tour de France is still rather inspiring, though!

Many thanks to all of you!
I've been moving 35 years worth of accumulated stuff for the past couple of weeks and haven't had a chance to get on the bike, but I get an occasional spare moment to look at the pictures on this thread and live vicariously through all of you. Also lost a friend this week and have been down-in-the-dumps about that.

Today I wont ride, Sat and Sun went out here in CT on the River and Heritage trails in Farmington, Burlington, Collinsville, Avon Simsbury
Very scenic, wooded most of the way and the River section runs on the Farmington River up towards Collinsville.
Heritage canal trail has a raised vista over the same river on the bridge.
Paved and with some roads connecting the trails, but really nice to be mostly car-free

I've been kicking around taking the fenders off my Norther for a few weeks now so I could slap my 47mm tires on. Really glad I finally did as my local shop did a ride yesterday. The plan was 10ish miles on mostly pavement but after the only folks who showed up with very much bicycle people we opted for something more like 25 miles with about 20 of it gravel and dirt and the woods. I'm the bike in the lower left, but we did cross this excellent old railroad bridge.

Saturday was a classic Vermont ride on my Mercian starting in Chester down to Saxtons River, up through Grafton back to Chester. Came across a black bear cub crossing the road, thankful that Mama was nowhere to be seen!
