Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Fastest 300K!

https://www.machka.net/2006/2006_300_Drumheller.htm

Complete with photos!

It was a gorgeously warm day ... that makes two brevets in a row with warm temps this year!! But there was a howling wind. Still, I think that wind benefitted me more than hindered me.

The route goes out to the Drumheller valley which is interesting because Drumheller is known for its dinosaurs. You can see a picture of some of the wildlife out there on my website story.

And I completed this one in 15:06 ..... a personal best for a 300K! My previous best was 16:40.

Congatulations, Machka. Well done!

I did my second (ever) 300K yesterday. Felt great the whole way. Today, however, the quads and knees are reminding me of it. Maybe the next one will be 400K. It seems rather daunting, but then, so did 300K until I did it.

Does anyone know what is the actual world record for the highest number of kilometers completed in a complete day (24 hours) well within 24 hours.

500 and something miles.

You can look up the various results on the 24-hour event links I have on my website:

Drafting or not drafting (what you probably mean). Drafting is just under 2012 KM. Mike Secrest drafted a semi truck with a special rear fairing around a Texas test track for 24 hours. Did something like 1250 miles.

Wow, Congratulations

300K in one day? I think that I did 300K in one week only 2 or 3 times.

I can't wait to see how the 400K goes too. It's a loop in the Rocky Mountains with fantastic scenery, but with several significant climbs.

I've got a 27 hour time limit on it. I've never taken more than 22 hours to do a 400K .... however there's the potential that this one might be an exception.

I know ... and I debated about doing that, but I was pretty tired and ready to be done. I figured I'd get my double when I do the 400K.

My quads can sympathize with your quads.

Last night I was thinking about the 400K and ... even though I've done several of them, I was daunted by the prospect ... and then I remembered ....... never think about your next brevet on the day, or day after, you finish one. I can barely look at my bicycle the day after a brevet! However, several days later, I'm ready to roll again.

My 400K is May 27th, when is yours?

So did you do the whole ride solo? I only did 50 km on Saturday and I was bored mindless!

Very cool, BTW.

Yep, it was solo. Most of my rides are solo. I did encounter some of the other randonneurs on the route out there when they passed me, but that was it.

Congrats Machka, great ride and photos.

After our ride yesterday I was talking to our club president about his PBP experiences.. It was facinating hearing about his rides and what he experienced while riding long distances.

It takes a special person

I ride with the Lone Star Randonneurs (www.lonestarrandon.tripod.com) and our next brevet is also May 27.

Do you know what your route is like yet? I have to take a closer look at mine, but I know that some of it is going to be on the same route as last year: https://www.machka.net/brevet/2005_400.htm ..... so the quantity of climbing is a bit of a concern.

Well done Machka! 300 km is a long way! I'm going for my very first 400 this saturday-sunday... I'm a bit scared of it but also looking forward to it... I've done several 200+km rides the last 2 week-ends (long week ends in France...) and felt allright, even in the end, so I think I'm ready for the 400. I'm looking forward to riding through the night, that will be something completely new for me...
