with the recent freezing rain, followed by snow, and finally with fog and mist this morning, it was more of a day for a walk than to risk life on the bike. Still, the crap weather did make things reasonably scenic...

the fog lifted enough to get out on the bike! Yipee!!
The conditions weren't a lot different from my shot in the post above this. At least some of the roads were in good condition!
A couple of shots taken on Singing Woods road. Lovely road, but never heard any singing other than the owls.
an "action" shot, demonstrating the glory and majesty of a winter cornfield.
Of course, you'll recognize the Akron grain elevators on the right.
unlike me, some folks had to be outside on a day like this. There have been a lot of homes without power, due to tree branches breaking under the weight of the ice and snow. The utility companies have been trying to keep trees cut further back from the power lines ever since a large power outage a few winters ago, but stuff still happens a bit.
despite their tendency to bring down power lines, the snow covered trees really do look great!

On the Cap Trail yesterday, two disturbing sights of motor vehicle tracks in the verge between Route 5 and the path. Veered off the road onto the path, intentionally or not? Maintenance vehicle doing it the easy way? Who knows? Beautiful day for a ride otherwise.

That is one cool table. It would probably cost me another $58,500 to get it into my home, only to find out it doesn't fit, but still. Cool table.

NC that is, recent country road ride to Eureka NC, closest town to the site of a near nuclear disaster in 1961. It's hard to believe in the heart of the cold war the US had B-52 Stratofortresses in the air at all times carrying nuclear bomb payloads as part of operation Chrome Dome. 6 days away from the 60th anniversary
While the nuclear devices that fell near Goldsboro were equipped with safety devices to prevent accidental explosions, much as revolvers have safety catches, Jones reported that three of the four safety mechanisms in the bomb that had deployed its parachute had become unlocked during its plunge to the ground. Two were rendered ineffective by the breakup of the aircraft, and a third was set off by the fall. Fortunately, the last failsafe, a low-voltage switch, worked. According to the Guardian, “When the bomb hit the ground, a firing signal was sent to the nuclear core of the device, and it was only that final, highly vulnerable switch that averted calamity.”“One simple, dynamo-technology, low voltage switch stood between the United States and a major catastrophe,” Jones wrote. The safety supervisor also asserted that had the mid-air breakup of the B-52 caused an electrical short to the switch, “a postulate that seems credible,” it could have resulted in a nuclear explosion. Jones concluded that “The Mk 39 Mod 2 bomb did not possess adequate safety for the airborne alert role in the B-52” and that the devices designed to prevent an accidental detonation were “not complex enough.” The near-disaster resulted in more stringent safeguards being placed on America’s nuclear arsenal.

things are warming up a bit and I can put the cross-country skis away for a while.
Had a nice little ride down to the Illinois river, where I saw geese taking advantage of the open area of water. The bald eagle was probably also doing a bit of fishing in that stretch of open water too.

While I was in Yuma, I did have a variety of opportunities for sunset photos. I think my favorites were those that I took during my first flight in the back seat of our trainer jets... the TA-4 Skyhawk. So scenic and so much fun! ... other than the issue of air sickness..
