So although I built my Volare( 2010 model I just found out) for the winter I have been riding it constantly because it really is super dialed into my fit and riding style. I did the math and came up with these numbers. I first rode it on July 31 and as of today have accumulated approximately 480 miles so far. This does not count the other bikes I grab to get around town on as well.

this one tops them all!

Heh, that sounds like so much fun, I'll bet the dogs loved it too.

More mods...

Moved the spacers to raise the handlebars, more like my MTN bike. Added a water bottle, added a place to carry gear. The brakes were not working as well as I would like, they seemed rough and surged. The brake rotors had large holes in them, my bike suggested replacing them which I did./left]

McMitchell, is looks great. Are the new rotors SRAM Centerlines? How do you like them? I also like your handlebar. It has a nice moderate backsweep to it; I get it's comfy.

Hi Hokiefyd,

The new rotors are SRAM “ Rotor Cntrln 160mm, rounded“. They work much better on the Hy-Rd disc brakes, than the lighter ones that had larger gaps that were rubbing & stuttering.

I am thinking about a 35-45 degree stem to get the bar up closer to the height on my MTN bike, although I may ride it as is for a while.

The handlebar is carbon and does seem to help with vibrations on the gravel roads here. I have some permanent nerve damage that causes my hands to go numb.

Bianchi Camaleonte 1 (2015)

It has undergone a conversion to drops and then back to flat bars.

XLC Comp, 110mm, 40 degrees. Not the lightest, budget stem.

Nice Bianchi! Is that a Topeak MTX rack painted silver? I can see what appears to be a sliding track on the top of the rack, but I also know that Topeak do not currently offer these in silver. If you painted it yourself, I'm interested to know what paint you used and how it's holding up. Thanks!

Topeak Super Tourist DX non-disc. I bought it from CRC 2 years ago, they still have it in silver: Topeak Super Tourist DX Rack | Chain Reaction Cycles
Definitely not painted myself

I like mine very much. I ride on narrow paved roads in the community I live in, which have lots of gravel on them. The gravel in the tight corners gets especially deep and can cause skids. I feel much more stable on the 40Cs. I also have 28mm Continentals for those occasions I may decide to ride on paved roads.

My bike has a few new features.....

End Bars, 35 degree stem, bell, new water bottle holder & water bottle.

What didn’t you like about the drop bar conversion?

I watned to raise the bars a bit higher, and the steerer was cut from the very beginning. I was using a 40 degree stem. Not that I did not like it, it was OK, but I got the Double Cross frame and moved the parts to it. I know, I could have swapped the fork, but Double Cross can take wider tires and it has uncut steerer. Overall I like it better.

Reasonably happy so far with this 2019 Giant Escape 1 Disc. Tires are a little noisier than I expected, but otherwise I'm in love. Added a 4" riser stem and oddball "antelope antler" handlebar extenders which ... I just ... like, though I guess they're probably a bit weird. They're roughly in the same position as the handles on an elliptical exercise machine haha. But I like 'em. That's a Topeak rack with an MTX basket. Son has a Topeak rack, too, so we can share the basket depending on who needs it.

Nice.

I like the changes you have made to customise it to what works for you.

Aw, thanks! I ride 90% for fitness on roads in a four-season temperate climate (rain, snow, leaves, clear tarmac), but occasionally gravel and across rustic parks and grassy fields. I find myself using the "antelope antlers" on gentle climbs and cruising on flats -- and they REALLY help cut down on lumbar pain for me. It's that ability to switch positions that brings the comfort.
