Best ways to remove rust from my Miyata 610?
I’m happy to say my Miyata 610 arrivedvia FedEx today from Portland, OR. I’m in Toronto and although it’s very hot & humid here now (27’C ++), it won’t be long before the much cooler weather arrives so I need to give a thorough cleaning and repacking. It turns out I’M the one who is rusty. I haven’t done any bike maintenance in about 35 years!
will folks please recommend the best ways to remove rust from the frame and chrome pieces as well as the bike’s nuts and bolts. I thought I might use CLR but a quick internet search advises that I use tin foil and lime juice! Say what? Really?
Sadly, it looks like my cousin left my bike out in the rain for a couple of years or maybe it was just the humidity in Portland but there’s a ton more rust on her than I expected.
I’d greatly appreciate your suggestions.

Try steel wool first. Works good on chrome for me. For deeper rust, phosphoric acid will neutralize the rust, but you wanna cover up the now-bare metal ASAP with some kind of touch-up paint, or it will just rust again.

I use both steel wool (the really fine stuff) as well as aluminum foil. Both work well. I usually use a few drops of whatever degreasing solvent/cleaner I have on hand (right now it’s Park stuff), and that has always worked for me. For a few of the really stubborn spots, I have scraped the rust off with a razor blade, the used the steel wool.
